When Taylor Swift’s former label, Big Machine Records, was purchased on June 30, 2019, by Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings Group, the singer wrote a lengthy - and angry - Tumblr missive about the label’s new owner, leading many music fans to ask, “Who is Scooter Braun?” His name may not be familiar to everyone, but Braun is a music industry maestro who’s had a hand in the careers of many of your favorite artists. Many of them weighed in via social media to comment on the Swift-Braun controversy.
Braun’s most prominent client is Justin Bieber, one of the world’s biggest pop stars, but he’s not just a music manager. Braun has a collection of different ventures: Aside from music, he works in film and technology, as well as gives to various charities. Even with all of his work in the public eye, his feud with Taylor Swift is what shined a light on his name.
Braun Is Responsible For Justin Bieber's Career, Who Is Also His Biggest Defender
Many of the celebrities whose careers Braun jump-started or took over have come to the manager's defense, but none more so than Justin Bieber.
On the same day Swift posted about the acquisition of her catalog, Bieber responded on Instagram, apologizing for his past actions before telling Swift Braun has "had [her] back" since early on in Bieber's career.
Braun discovered Bieber when he was just a 12-year-old singing on YouTube. It took some time for Bieber's mother to get fully on board with the young manager, but after Bieber was allowed to travel to Atlanta to work with Braun and Usher full-time, the young singer's career took off.

Braun Says He Has ‘Broken More New Artists Than Any Other Music Executive In The Last Decade’
According to Braun's website, he "has broken more new artists than any other music executive in the last decade." As boastful as that sounds, his track record is genuinely impressive, and he's helped artists like Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Psy build successful careers.
The impressive list of artists on his roster runs the gamut from K-pop to country and hip-hop.
Braun's Client Management Roster Is A-List
Regardless of whether he's working with new or established artists, everyone under his umbrella is either famous or very famous. He represents models like Karlie Kloss and Ashley Graham, as well as musical groups, including the Black Eyed Peas.
Some of his clients were famous before he came in as a manager or advisor, such as Kanye West, Usher, Hilary Duff, and Idina Menzel.
Big Names In Music Have Expressed Support For Swift Over Braun
While Braun has a corner full of A-list celebrity clients, Swift has the support of multiple women in the music industry. Artists like Sky Ferreira and Halsey have come to her defense, and even Selena Gomez’s mom has spoken up for her.
Ferreira, who's had notable ups and down in the music industry, posted an Instagram story in support of Swift:
I signed contracts when I was 15 & I'm still paying the consequences for it. Every contract I have ever signed has always been set up to take advantage of me/my work in some way.
Halsey also had positive words for Swift, saying that it "turns [her] guts that no matter how much power or success a woman has in life [they're] still susceptible to someone coming along and making [them] feel powerless out of spite."
Gomez's mom, Mandy Teefey, wrote on Instagram:
I wish I could give you a big hug right now! Thank you for speaking out about this and teaching future young artists about protecting themselves. I don’t understand the pleasure of power plays to simply hurt people.
