A great basketball dunk can make for some of the greatest and most exciting sports highlights. The term "slam dunk" was originally coined by LA Lakers announcer Chick Hearn, and it has become such a staple of the game that now there's even an official Slam Dunk Contest held each year during the NBA All-Star Weekend. But the people on this list don't exactly have what it takes for that contests. These are the worst, most embarrassing, basketball dunk fails ever.Often, a truly inspired basketball play can make an individual into an Internet legend. That must have been what all these people were thinking. Unfortunately, as you'll see, it doesn't always turn out that way. This is a list of funny or embarrassing videos of basketball players trying to dunk, and failing, sometimes miserably, and always hilariously.
Fan Dunks Himself
This clip is not so much a dunk FAIL, per se, but an unconventional dunk win. A young fan races across the court, jumps off a small trampoline set up for this purpose and proceeds to throw the ball into the hoop. OK, so not quite a dunk, but not a humiliating, disgusting failure either, right? It's what happens next that strains the limits of the imagination. The fan proceeds to essentially dunk himself into the basket, neatly slipping through the hoop mere moments before the guy behind him slams a basketball home over his head. Was the fan's goal to perform death-defying acrobatics before the good people of the U.S. Airways Center? Or was this just a happy accident, narrowly avoiding slicing his head open on the side of the rim (which, let's face it, also would have made a good video.) The world may never know for sure.
Charlie the Loathsome Cougar
Cats might always land on their feet, but the same principle doesn't hold for humans in cat costumes, as we learn from this college mascot clip. Here, the Man in the Mountain Cat Suit adjusts his costume, dribbles around for a bit, and then attempts to jump off of some kind of medicine ball and connect for the slam dunk. Unfortunately, the Laws of Physics actually applied on this day on this basketball court (who'd have thought!), and instead of soaring majestically through the air like a puma springing on to its prey, the mascot flops hard on to the ground like a disoriented tabby that somehow got into its owner's pot stash. Hilarity ensues.
Leading With His Chin
Any YouTube video that BEGINS in slow-motion is pretty much a guaranteed winner. And "Horrible Fan Dunk Fail" is, naturally, no different. A fan, participating in a halftime NBA dunk contest, actually does manage to stuff the ball into the basket. Unfortunately, he immediately thereafter slams his own face and chin into the basket before coming down HARD on the court. I hope there was some sort of prize for making this shot, 'cause it looks like someone may be needing some complicated bridgework after this.
Halftime Shot Goes Awry
During this halftime fan dunk contest, one unfortunate individual was given a significant leg up in the form of an on-court trampoline. The idea here would be to leap upwards, off of the trampoline, hanging on to the basketball, and then to place the ball inside the hoop. You know, just to clarify.Instead, what happens is sort of a mid-air ballet of sorts. The contestant CLEARLY lacks the ability to vertically leap high enough to dunk a basketball, even with a trampoline at the ready. So instead he sort of awkwardly flails about, all the way back down to Earth. The ball would likely have come closer to going in the basket if it had randomly been fired out of a potato gun in the general direction of the stadium from 3 towns over.
