Godzilla is probably the most iconic Japanese Sci-Fi movie character ever. This towering monster is one of the most referenced characters in movie history, so it only makes sense there’s plenty of Godzilla films on this list of Japanese Sci-Fi movies. In a way it's almost like a list of the best Godzilla movies, but there’s a lot more to this list than just the giant green monster. The original 1954 Godzilla, directed by Ishiro Honda, was so influential and popular it has spawned 30 films. The character of Godzilla has its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

1961’s Mothra was another film about Japanese kaiju, or monster. Kaiju have been the basis for newer films as well, such as Pacific Rim.
