Online blog WalletHub came out with a comprehensive list of the safest cities in America in 2017; it also revealed which cities are statistically the most dangerous cities in America. Deferring to a panel of experts who take into account crime, health, and natural disaster risk, the ranking of America's most dangerous cities encompasses a wide range of factors in its calculations.

Many of the most dangerous cities in America suffer the same social issues plaguing even the safest of cities today, including income inequality, civil rights for people of color and minorities, and severe disparity in the education system. For example, though Detroit ranks low in terms of community safety, it ranks quite high in terms of police presence, meaning extra law enforcement does not necessarily make a city safer. As mass shootings in 2017 revealed, nowhere in the country is completely "safe," and even though the numbers don't lie, there are a lot of moving pieces when it comes to one's safety in a city.

The scores listed below are a combination of each city's "home, community, & safety" ranking; "financial safety" ranking; and "natural-disaster risk" ranking. The higher the number, the more unsafe experts classified a city as.
