Princess Diana was beloved by the public, but not so much by the royal family. Initially the royal family refused to have the flags fly at half mast, but after a public outcry, that decision was changed.

Diana's funeral was watched by about 2.5 billion people on television. In attendance were Elton John, George Michael, Sting, Diana Ross, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg, among other celebrities.

Michael Jackson's funeral, a public ceremony, was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA on July 9, 2009. 17,000 lucky fans received tickets to the service through an online lottery. Jackson lay in a solid-bronze casket while musicians Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Jermaine Jackson, and others sang his songs.

Many celebrities attended including Macaulay Culkin, Chris Tucker, and Elizabeth Taylor, among others. The funeral cost around $1 million.

After John Lennon was tragically murdered in 1980, there was no public funeral for the beloved rock star. Lennon's wife Yoko Ono asked fans to commemorate her late husband by giving him 10 minutes of silence. In response, 50,000 fans gathered in New York's Central Park to honor her wish.
