'The Raven' is directed by James McTeigue ('V for Vendetta'). The film, which chronicles the last days of Edgar Allan Poe before his death in 1849, is entirely fiction. In 'The Raven,' the killer uses Poe's tales to brutally murder several people. Along the way, the murderer taunts both Poe and Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans). Things become even more personal for Edgar Allan Poe when the woman he loves, Emily Hamilton (Alice Eve), is taken by the killer. Can he figure out the mystery before his beloved becomes the serial murderer's next victim?
Detective Fields: "What cannot be disputed, is that your imagination is the inspiration of horrendous crime."
Edgar Allan Poe's incredible imagination was a gift, but in this case, it is most certainly a curse. Could he ever dream that someone would draw inspiration from his macabre stories to kill?
As the serial killer stalks victims in 19th century Baltimore, he begins to raise the stakes. With each new death, the murderer leaves more clues -- and all are based on Edgar Allan Poe's characters (who each meet horrible fates).
Edgar Allan Poe: "What's going on?" Detective Fields: "I'm Detective Fields, please, sit down Mr. Poe." Edgar Allan Poe: "Yes, the infamous Detective Fields. Am I under arrest?" Detective Fields: "No, not as yet." Edgar Allan Poe: "But I'd rather stand -- it makes it easier to leave." Detective Fields: "The night before last, a young girl and her mother were found murdered. The daughter's body was lodged in a chimney, the mother's head was nearly severed with a straight razor. Does any of this sound familiar to you, Mr. Poe?" Edgar Allan Poe: "But you're talking about my story...a work of fiction..." Detective Fields: "I'm afraid I'm not."
When Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes the connection that the serial killer he's after is using Edgar Allan Poe's works as inspiration, he calls Poe in immediately. Is Poe a suspect? Or does Fields want him to help him catch the killer?
Detective Fields: "The Pit and the Pendulum -- Are there other stories in the collection, specifically about murder?" Edgar Allan Poe: "I'm afraid so."
Yes, Detective Fields, unfortunately, there are many, many other stories that this murderer can use as fuel to kill.
Detective Fields (reading letter from killer): "I challenge the brilliant mind of Edgar Allan Poe to a game of wits...I will kill again, and on that corpse I will leave clues."
From 'The Pit and the Pendulum' to 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue,' each of the killer's victims deaths is somehow related to Poe's stories. If anyone can help shed light on the murderer's identity, it's Poe.
Edgar Allan Poe: "I would gladly give my life for hers..." Detective Fields: "I know you would."
As if the search for the serial killer wasn't urgent enough already, things take an even more urgent turn when the woman Edgar Allan Poe loves, Emily Hamilton (Alice Eve), is taken by the murderer.
