It’s a whole new frontier out there in the Milky Way, so of course astronauts have seen sights that are unimaginable to Earthlings confined by our home planet's gravity.

After all, it took humans millennia to launch themselves into space and live to tell the tale. As space guru/astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson says, "What are the lessons to be learned from this journey of the mind [through the universe]? That humans are emotionally fragile, perennially gullible, hopelessly ignorant masters of an insignificantly small speck in the cosmos.”

Despite the existential awe of traveling to space, there's also a collection of weird things - both tangible and inexplicable - that astronauts report seeing during their time outside Earth’s atmosphere.

From space eels to exploding UFOs, the stories astronauts can tell about the things their eyes have seen are truly out of this world. What are some of the absolute weirdest things astronauts have seen in space?
