Graveyard Shift The Original Little Mermaid Story Is Actually Super Dark And Twisted

Mick Jacobs

In Disney's classic animated film The Little Mermaid, Ariel's adventure puts her through a number of trials to be with her prince charming. Even when the film gets darkest, it saves itself with a happily ever after that melts any viewer's cold heart. As this video suggests, though, the animated romp springs from far darker source material.

Unfortunately, the original Hans Christian Anderson fairytale surrounding a mermaid longing for human contact reads much more somberly than Disney's reimagining. While Ariel dealt with simple matters such as getting her man, the mermaid of Anderson's fable faced some tough existential crises.

In addition to facing some heavy subject matter, the original mermaid also dealt with nasty side effects caused by the potion that gave her legs. The more you read about her tale, it sounds less like a fairytale and more like a nightmare.

And as for a happily ever after, forget about it. When read in their first versions, everyone's favorite childhood fairytales get pretty gruesome. It's never as simple as "Part of Your World," and the video below proves as much beyond the shadow of a doubt. Watch to experience the morbid original version of every kid's favorite underwater fable.
