The laid-back smiling face of the man known only as "Good Guy Greg" (or "GGG") first appeared on the message board 4Chan around April of 2011. Soon after, the series of image macros - in which the "Greg" character's over-the-top generosity and thoughtfulness are explored - had spread to Canvas, Quickmeme, Reddit, FunnyJunk, Tumblr and elsewhere.

"Greg" is commonly seen as the antithesis of another meme personality, "Scumbag Steve." Many have charted the origin of the "Good Guy Greg" joke to be a series of reverse-logic Scumbag Steve series called "Cool Guy Steve." Another possible origin, cited by Know Your Meme, postulates that GGG could have grown out of the "Generous Jeff" meme, in which a photo of Jeff Bridges as The Dude from "The Big Lebowski" is depicted along with captions about being a thoughtful, conscientious stoner.

The basic joke of the GGG meme is simple: A situation is presented in the upper caption, and then Greg's "Good Samaritan" response in the lower caption reinforces his kind and giving nature. The template does not, on the surface, appear to present the same opportunities for wordplay or comic exaggeration as some other memes. Frequently, in lieu of an overt "punchline," Good Guy Greg images are used as a platform for discussions of pet peeves, expressions of frustration or issuing general thoughts on manners and proper etiquette.

What are the best Good Guy Greg memes? Some variations of the goodguy greg (aka the "nice guy steve" meme for idiots) meme include entries that seem to critique his "turn the other cheek" attitude, such as a series in which Greg invites people to shove things into his anus. (This strain of GGG entries are represented below.) Others feature a deceptive Greg offering what seems to be a friendly offer that turns out to have an ulterior, selfish motive.

No information is currently known about the origin of the photo or the man - an upbeat, friendly-looking fellow in the process of smoking a joint - depicted therein.
