Without a judge, it's basically impossible to have a reality show competition. But sometimes it feels like a bad reality show judge worse than no judge at all. Instead of enjoying a fun dynamic between the judges that keeps you watching each week, you tune in to see if one of the other judges finally snaps and tells them off.

Reality TV judges on talent shows like The X Factor, Dancing With The Stars, The Voice, and America's Got Talent are judging people at incredibly vulnerable moments, but that doesn't stop some of them from being incredibly mean. There's a line between cruelty and constructive criticism and the meanest TV judges cross it constantly. It's not just cutting comments that create the worst TV judges, apathetic and ineffectual judges are just as bad. Nodding along mindlessly, not adding to anything else the panel is telling the contestant, or being unable to effectively convey why they're even qualified to be a judge can just ruin a show.
