The Worst Video Games Based on TV Shows

Updated October 16, 2020 673 votes 179 voters 5.6k views10 items

A list of the ten absolute worst video games based on TV shows. No matter how popular the TV series that inspires them, games based on shows tend to be terrible, whether because they're boring, weird, tough to play, or just fundamentally misconceived.

Licensed games tend to be bad and licensed games based on television shows tend to be even worse. Occasionally, a South Park: The Stick of Truth comes along and overturns the conventional wisdom, but usually, even shows that seem like they would make great games result in unplayable messes. When Superman gets an awful game, how can shows like American Idol or Home Improvement result in anything but gaming disaster?

If it's on this list, it's one of the worst games based on TV shows in the history of video games. One of the ten worst, specifically. Vote up the most frustratingly terrible and pointless video games inspired by TV shows below!

    Superman 64

    Video: YouTube

Superman 64 (based on Superman: The Animated Series) took the most powerful superhero in the universe and tasked him with an impossibly herculean task: flying through rings. That's it. No, really.

Pretty much the entire game involved flying around Metropolis (a city besieged by fog), periodically steering through floating rings. Occasionally you had to pick up and throw a car, but if you failed that mission you would have to go back to flying through more rings. No wonder it's considered one of the worst games of all time.

    American Idol: The Game

    Video: YouTube
This game about the massively popular TV singing competition is all about dancing. Seriously. There's no singing in the American Idol game. It's fundamentally misconceived, even just beyond being an American Idol video game.

    Home Improvement: Power Tool Pursuit!

    Video: YouTube
What do you think of when you think of the 1990s TV sitcom Home Improvement? You probably think of Tim Allen making dumb noises, talking to his faceless neighbor, and hosting the worst tool-related TV show of all time. One thing you would never think of is dinosaurs. Yes, you read that right. Home Improvement: Power Tool Pursuit features Tim "Tool Man" Taylor running around in the prehistoric times shooting at dinosaurs with a nail gun. What were they thinking?

    Charlie's Angels: The Game

    Video: YouTube
Yes, this is technically based on the movie that is based on the TV Show, but it is just too terrible to leave off the list. Most of the game features the Angels in bikinis for no reason, beating up random people in warehouses and mansions. The game is so glitchy that the same level will often just repeat over and over again for no reason, trapping in a Groundhog's Day-style nightmare of purgatorial bikini-clad gameplay.
