The scariest place to be in the Harry Potter series is Azkaban prison, which the main character never visited but heard enough horrifying tales about to understand that he never wanted to go there. Azkaban was guarded by creatures known as dementors, who subjected the prisoners to continual torture by using their powers of spreading grief and despair. There's more to the history and in-and-outs of Azkaban than most fans know, however, and there are particularly terrifying facts that will scare up even the most ardent Harry Potter fans out there.

The movie version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban didn't make clear how Sirius made his great escape after 12 years locked up in Azkaban. The book elaborated on this by revealing that Sirius had regained his inner spirit after learning that Peter Pettigrew - who had framed him for his own crimes - was still alive and resolved to take his revenge.

Sirius then transformed into a dog using his Animagus powers and slipped between the bars of his cell. He was so skinny by this point that his dog form was skeletal enough for Sirius to slip by, with the dementors' blindness preventing them to take note. Finally, Sirius had to swim all the way back to the mainland, meaning he swam all the way through the North Sea to achieve his freedom while maintaining his dog form.

Although it was reported in the Daily Prophet that Azkaban inmates had broken out by themselves, and Order of the Phoenix members believed Voldemort visited Azkaban himself, the truth is that the dementors let the prisoners out. This was due to a deal they had made with Voldemort, who promised them easy victims to feed on rather than guarding prisoners. To this end, the dementors freed Bellatrix Lestrange and her cohorts, which also displayed Voldemort's powers of persuasion as he was successful in controlling Azkaban itself.

The history of Azkaban is horrifying, to say the least. It was originally an unknown rock where a dark wizard named Ekrizdis created his lair, following he lured unsuspecting Muggle sailors to the location and proceeded to torture them. As it is, the manner with which he tormented and killed these Muggles is so terrible that wizards don't go into detail .

The only time when Azkaban became visible to anyone was after Ekrizdis had died and his crimes became known. The Ministry of Magic hadn't gone looking for Azkaban and were unaware that it ever existed, with their discovery of Azkaban coming about due to the warding around the area being lifted. It was when Ministry officials entered the now-abandoned lair that they uncovered the horrors within.
