Fairy Tail began as a manga by Hiro Mashima that debuted in 2006. In 2009, its wildly popular anime adaption came out. But even if you're one of the series' most hardcore fans, there's still plenty of trivia and details that may have escaped your notice. This list is here to make you just a little wiser about the wonderful world of Fairy Tail.
Many of the things you didn't know about Fairy Tail have to do with designs and ideas that Mashima scrapped. For example, at one point he intended to make Gray Fullbuster a Rave Master tie-in - Rave Master being an earlier manga of his. Here's another detail that didn't make the cut - Natsu was going to have horns. There are also details about the inspiration behind the characters - Lucy's name was apparently taken from Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by the Beatles.

When asked during an interview if he felt like any of the characters resembled him, Mashima said this:
"I do. I think every character that I come up with is somehow a reflection of myself. Sometimes I’m fiery like Natsu, sometimes I’m serious like Lucy, take off my clothes like Gray … or not. [laughs]"
In another interview, he singled out Natsu as the character he most related to.
"Definitely Natsu. He's like me in junior high! (laughs) All the other characters are based on my friends, my editors, people I know through work."
Ever wondered what Fairy Tail might be liked if Gray were also a dragon slayer? Well, Mashima considered taking that route, making him an Ice Dragon Slayer. The idea was rejected, but Mashima considered it again around the Tenrou Island arc. Ultimately, he decided on making him an Ice Devil Slayer instead. This was finalized before the Grand Magic Games arc began.
Instead of the Celestial Keys that Lucy uses throughout the series, Lucy was originally going to use cards. This idea was discarded since it had been used multiple times in other series such as Card Captor Sakura. The keys were intended to make Lucy unique.

Gray Fullbuster Was Going To Be A 'Rave Master' Tie-In
When Hiro Mashima first designed Gray Fullbuster, he intended to use him to create a crossover with his other work, Rave Master. The necklaces he wears was actually going to be a Rave, and he was going to be the 10th Rave Master. However, Mashima eventually ditched that particular idea.
The Tower of Heaven arc is often praised as one of Fairy Tail's best arcs, but Mashima originally had some very different plans for it. Originally, her brutal past as a slave in the tower was intended to be her present, while the events of Fairy Tail were meant to be a dream about her future. This idea was loosely inspired by a Chinese story called "Dream of a Butterfly." The idea was discarded and reversed, with Erza's present being with the Fairy Tail guild and her past in the tower. As a reference to the old idea, butterflies do appear in her dream of the past.

Natsu's Motion Sickness Was Inspired By A Friend Of Mashima's
One of Natsu's more unusual traits is his motion sickness. While there's a canon reason for this that has to do with his status as a Dragon Slayer, there's also a meta reason. Mashima said in an interview that this trait was inspired by a friend of his who experiences something similar. He said:
"I'm actually afraid of heights and airplanes, but I don't have motion sickness. A friend of mine has that. When we take taxis together, he just gets sick. On one hand, it's bad for him, but on the other hand, it's kind of hilarious. (laughs)"
