The Gotei 13 is the major military branch in Soul Society, and the organization that most of the Shinigami from Bleach belong to. Because they're such an important part of the series, most Bleach fans probably have the basic rundown on the captains' roles, powers, and personalities - but there are probably still things you didn't know about the Bleach captains. Let's dig into some Gotei 13 trivia!
One particularly fun example is that many of the characters have theme songs assigned by Tite Kubo. These songs weren't written specifically for the Bleach characters: rather, they were songs that Kubo already knew that he felt were reminiscent of those characters. Many of them are Western songs by bands like AFI and Social Distortion. Kubo isn't just getting influenced by music, though - did you know that Kisuke Urahara was patterned after a Moomin character?
Which of these bits of trivia did you find the most interesting?

Yoruichi & Rangiku Are Tite Kubo's Favorite Female Characters
During an interview at Comic Con, Tite Kubo was asked about his favorite characters from his own series. He revealed that his two favorite female characters were Lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto and Captain Yoruichi Shihōin, members of the Gotei 13. Why? Kubo said that
"...their attitude is like, they just don't care what people think of them! (laughs) I have a lot of fun drawing them and creating stories with them.”
After betraying Soul Society, Gin Ichimaru is very much a former member of the Gotei 13. One interesting thing about him is that he ended up being far more popular than his creator ever anticipated, especially among female fans. Kubo intended for Gin to come across as creepy and off-putting, not appealing.
When designing Kisuke Urahara, Tite Kubo got his inspiration from an unexpected source - Tove Jansson's Moominvalley novels. While most of the resemblance is in the design, both characters share a laid back personality that can turn serious when necessary.

Rukia Was Originally Supposed To Be The Protagonist
In the series' earlier drafts, Bleach was actually a gun-focused series called Snipe. In this version of the series, Rukia was the protagonist. When the premise changed, so did Rukia's role. Ichigo is a great protagonist, but it's hard not to wonder what the show would have been like with Rukia at the helm.
Before he started creating Bleach, Tite Kubo wanted to draw a Shinigami wearing a kimono. This initial drawing would ultimately become Rukia. That makes her the first Bleach character ever!
While it's not always obvious due to the the fact that she's wearing clothes that cover it, Yoruichi Shihōin has a tribal tattoo on the outside of her left thigh. This was first shown in an illustration Kubo included in Volume 26 of the manga.
