Her Grandmother Was On An SS 'Wanted' List During WWII
Helena's grandmother, Violet Bonham Carter, Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury, was a prominent diarist and politician whose father, H.H. Asquith, was Prime Minster in the first years of WWI.
A close friend of Winston Churchill, Violet strongly opposed the British appeasement policy of the 1930s. The Third Reich took note of her firm anti-fascist stance.
When tentative plans were being made for Germany to invade Britain in 1940 (so-called "Operation Sea Lion"), the SS drew up a list of British residents who were to be rounded up as soon as possible after the conquest, presumably for imprisonment or worse. Among those on this list were Churchill, Virgina Woolf, Noel Coward, H.G. Wells, and Violet Bonham Carter.
Fortunately for all involved, Operation Sea Lion turned out to be no more than a pipe dream.
She Was Awarded The Commander Of The Order Of The British Empire
Helena Bonham Carter has not only been acclaimed and awarded within the film community, she also received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II. She Used Baking To Help Her Vocal LessonsVideo: YouTube
In Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter was forced to sing for a large portion of the film, which is to be expected, considering it's a musical. However, seeing as she wasn't a particularly experienced singer, she took to vocal lessons. As there are sequences where her singing must be in rhythm with the baking, she decided to practice the two together.
Carter would spend her free time baking and singing to herself in order to practice the sequences.
