April 7, 2021 864 votes 184 voters 17.2k views20 items

One of the most exciting things about most shonen series is the villains. Without them, there'd be nothing to the hero to struggle against, no conflicts for them to overcome. Whether they're sympathetic and fascinating evildoers who you want to see triumph or terrible monsters you want to see destroyed, you still might want to know more about them. With that in mind, let's launch right into things you didn't know about shonen villains.

Here's one from a recent series: according to his creator, Mahito from Jujutsu Kaisen has a lot in common with Thanos from The Avengers. Like your shows a little bit older? Eiichiro Oda once said that if Akainu were the protagonist of One Piece, the whole show would have been over in a year - he's just that powerful.

  • Why is One Piece so long? According to Oda, it might be because he didn't make Akainu into the protagonist. According to an audio interview, he's so powerful that everything in the series could have been totally resolved within the space of the year if he were running the show.
