20 Things You Didn't Know About The Straw Hat Pirates

Whether you've been keeping up with One Piece for decades or have only recently set sail, all One Piece fans have met at least some of the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy, Sanji, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Chopper, Robin, Jinbe, Franky, and Brook combine their varying personalities and powers to form one of the most beloved groups in the anime world. But no matter how much you might like them, there are probably still some things you didn't know about the Straw Hat Pirates.

Here's a cool fact. Many of the lies that Usopp tells end up coming true later on. This is either the world's biggest coincidence, or Usopp knows more than he's letting on. Here's another: Luffy typically lets his enemies live, but it's not out of any moral duty. He does it because he thinks that letting them live is a better punishment. There's plenty more trivia about the rest of the crew where that came from, so let's get into it!

Why Doesn't Luffy Finish His Enemies?

Like many shonen heroes, Luffy doesn't end his enemies' lives. But he's not like Vash from Trigun or Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin - he's not against it for moral reasons.

But for Luffy, leaving his enemies alive is a better punishment. If they simply pass away, they won't get to watch while Luffy overturns everything they were working towards. Considering his generally sunny attitude, it's surprising that his approach to battle is so cold!

Why Does Luffy Have The Gum-Gum Fruit?

The abilities granted by the Gum-Gum fruit are unusual for a protagonist. While Luffy has been able to use them in impressive and badass ways, being really stretchy doesn't exactly scream "hero."

So, why did Oda choose it? In a Q&A section in the manga, he said that he intentionally chose something silly because he wanted to make sure that he could still have fun with Luffy no matter how serious the story might get. He's been writing One Piece since 1997, so clearly, the strategy worked.

Why Doesn't Luffy Have Thought Bubbles?

In the manga, Oda rarely uses thought bubbles to express Luffy's thoughts. When a fan asked him why he made that decision, he revealed that he wanted Luffy to come across as the sort of person who didn't hold back his thoughts, but expresses them either through words or actions. Out of all of the characters in One Piece, he uses the fewest thought bubbles.

If The Crew Had A Race, Brook Would Win

One of the many questions that Oda was asked about his characters involved how they'd place if they competed against each other in a 50-meter race. Here's the ranking:

    1. Brook
    2. Sanji
    3. Monkey D. Luffy
    4. Tony Tony Chopper
    5. Roronoa Zoro
    6. Usopp
    7. Nami
    8. Nico Robin
    9. Franky

Though Oda didn't explain all of the choices, he mentioned that Brook would win because he was the lightest, while Franky would come in last because he was the heaviest. Meanwhile, Zoro could have done better if he didn't get lost partway through.
