Many Of Their Names Were Inspired By Famous Architects & Designers

The members of the Espada are known for their unique and complex names. But Kubo didn't just pull those names out of nowhere - he actually based many of them off of the names of famous architects and interior designers.

For example, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez was named for both a British modernist architect name Nicholas Grimshaw and a Swiss watch and clock manufacturer named Jaeger-LeCoultre. Ulquiorra Cifer was named after Patricia Urquiola, a Spanish architect, and Coyote Starkk was named for a French product designer named Philippe Starck.

    Espada Means 'Sword' In Spanish

Espada is a Spanish word that means sword. This makes sense in that their Resurrección abilities usually take the form of a sword.

But why Spanish in particular? Kubo said that he chose the language because he thought it was "bewitching" and "mellow."
