15 Interesting Things You Might Not Know About The Espada

As the strongest members of Sousuke Aizen's Arrancar army, the Espada are among the most formidable villains in the Bleach universe. Whether you loved watching them at work or just wanted Ichigo and Co to defeat them already, it's hard to deny their impact - and there's a lot you may not have known about them.

What are some things you didn't know about the Espada. Well, like most of the major characters in Bleach, each of them has a song that Tite Kubo hopes you'll associate with them - when you think of Nnoitra Gilga, you should think of Megalomaniac by Incubus. Then there are their names - did you know that many of them are named after famous architects and designers?

Many Of Their Names Were Inspired By Famous Architects & Designers

The members of the Espada are known for their unique and complex names. But Kubo didn't just pull those names out of nowhere - he actually based many of them off of the names of famous architects and interior designers.

For example, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez was named for both a British modernist architect name Nicholas Grimshaw and a Swiss watch and clock manufacturer named Jaeger-LeCoultre. Ulquiorra Cifer was named after Patricia Urquiola, a Spanish architect, and Coyote Starkk was named for a French product designer named Philippe Starck.

There Were Only Going To Be Seven Of Them At First

During an interview, Kubo revealed that he originally planned for there to be only seven Espada members, with each one corresponding to one of the Seven Deadly Sins. He didn't want to be limited by that premise, and ended up creating other members, but he still used the Sins to inspire their moves and design. He explains:

"...there're also some things I take from the 7 deadly sins. Like the one now, who are the Espadas? Barragan, Aroniero's "Gluttoneria", Zael Apollo's "Fornicaras", and the same applies for Yammi. Those are the early days of "Espada". In the early stages of Espada, there were only 7 people. It's "Espada" with 7 swords but, it increased gradually and became the "Espada" of now. That's why there are some more of the 7 sins I haven't used. While drawing Aaroniero, he had the power "to eat" so I've got the "Gluttony" from the 7 deadly sins. But I also didn't want to just get stuck with the 7 sins. That's why there are times I don't use them on purpose and leave them be. Like for the early days Espada that survived (laugh)."

    They Were Censored For Violence

The Bleach anime is a lot less violent than the manga was, and the Espada was often the target of these changes.

Where Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez kicks Loly and rips her leg off in the manga, he simply slaps Loly and knocks her unconscious. His own injuries are censored too - on many occasions, burn wounds and cuts he receives don't bleed in the anime, but do in the manga.

Grimmjow isn't the only character this applies to. For example, the anime doesn't show Ulquiorra completely removing his eye. Also, manga Szayelaporro literally devours his Fraccion to heal, he turns it into a glowing purple orb that he eats afterwards.
