Neville Longbottom started out as a highly underrated character in the Harry Potter series who went on to realize his full potential. Neville is one of the most popular protagonists in the Wizarding World, and his status as Harry's close friend brought some pieces of his backstory into the novels. Still, there are plenty of facts about Neville and the Longbottom family that are scattered as hidden details throughout the books or were revealed afterward in separate works.

The Longbottom family may not be as well known as the Weasleys, but they do have several points of interest, ranging from Neville's background and current family status to facts about the extended members of the Longbottom clan.

In Order of the Phoenix, Hermione gives the members of Dumbledore's Army a special coin that lights up when they are summoned. The only members who kept their coin after the faction's dissolution were Neville and Luna - Neville has kept his all the way into adulthood.

Neville has made his Dumbledore's Army coin a valued possession that will be part of the inheritance that is passed down to any potential successors. The coin is now technically an heirloom of the Longbottom family - one that symbolizes Neville's heroics at Hogwarts.

The Longbottom Family Now Owns The Leaky Cauldron

The Leaky Cauldron is over 500 years old by the present-day events of the Harry Potter series. The pub has had multiple landlords over the centuries; Tom was the owner when Harry entered the Wizarding World. While Tom's status is unclear, it's known that Hannah Abbott has become the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

After Hannah and Neville were married, Neville moved into her place above the Leaky Cauldron. Hannah changed her last name to Longbottom, meaning the Leaky Cauldron is technically now owned by the Longbottom family. Neville particularly finds living above the pub to be an interesting experience and is enthusiastically supportive of Hannah's ownership of the Leaky Cauldron.

Neville Was Briefly An Auror After The Battle Of Hogwarts

Neville technically attended Hogwarts for his seventh and final year but never took the N.E.W.T. exams. Neville joined Harry and Ron at the Ministry of Magic after the Battle of Hogwarts, and the three never returned to complete their education - this technically makes Neville a dropout.

Neville's lack of qualifications ultimately had no negative impact on his career, because the Ministry of Magic exempted him from the exam requirement to be an Auror. Neville's heroics in the Battle of Hogwarts were considered to be equivalent to the entire three-year Auror training, as well, and he became one of the youngest Aurors ever.

A career as an Auror wasn't what Neville truly desired, though, and he left the Ministry after rounding up Voldemort's remaining Death Eaters. The position as Herbology teacher at Hogwarts is evidently Neville's true calling.

All Living Longbottom Family Members Are Elderly, Except Neville

Neville felt the weight of expectations on his shoulders during his youth, and it wasn't just to live up to his father's name. Neville is actually the final person in the Longbottom family line because all the other members of the family are elderly.

Neville was raised by his grandmother, Augusta, who is a Longbottom by marriage. The other Longbottom relatives don't appear to have heirs of their own, so they transferred their hopes of forwarding the family name down to Neville. It explains Neville's lack of social skills when he arrived at Hogwarts, because he was never around children his own age.

Algie Longbottom Tracked Down The Rare Mimbulus Mimbletonia

Mimbulus mimbletonia is a very rare form of cactus that has magical properties. It is covered in boils and shoots out sap as part of its natural defenses. The magical plant is extremely rare even for wizards, but Neville's uncle Algie managed to find one.

Algie's accomplishment is doubly impressive for the fact that the Mimbulus mimbletonia can only be found in Assyria - he traveled all the way there and had to locate the rare cactus. Algie then potted a Mimbulus mimbletonia that he gifted to Neville; it's this plant that Neville brings with him to Hogwarts in Order of the Phoenix.

Harfang Longbottom Is Arthur Weasley's Maternal Uncle

It's unclear how the wizard Harfang Longbottom is related to Neville, but the fact that they share a surname is proof of their familial ties. Harfang unites the Longbottoms with multiple other families, which ends up making Neville a relative of Ron.

Harfang married the witch Callidora Black, the sister of Cedrella, who is the mother of Arthur Weasley. Arthur's father, and Cedrella's husband, was Septimus Weasley, which makes Harfang and Septimus brothers-in-law. Harfang is thus the husband of Arthur's maternal aunt, meaning they likely were close.
