Things You Didn't Know About Cedric Diggory

Vote up the details you never knew before.

Cedric Diggory is one of the most unsung heroes of the Harry Potter series because his demise is somewhat overlooked after the many other tragedies that take place in the Second Wizarding War. In actuality, Cedric's passing is what begins the war since it marks the return of Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Cedric was more than just a martyr, however, and there are facts about the character that prove why he was such an exceptional wizard.

Some important details about Cedric were either omitted from the film version of Goblet of Fire or are unknown even to readers of the books, so points of interest about the character are certain to be eye-opening over what he was like.

Cedric's Wand Was Naturally Loyal To Him

Wands are suited to the personality of a person, and they pick the people who can wield them best. A wand made out of a unicorn hair core is considered to be most loyal to its owner because such people are less prone to turn to dark magic.

Cedric's wand was also made of ash wood. Ash wands are highly devoted to their original owners and answer best to them, even if they're won by someone else. The combination of ash wood and unicorn hair made Cedric's wand entirely loyal to him, and it was buried alongside him.

Eldritch Diggory, Minister for Magic in the 18th century, mysteriously passed when he attempted to reform Azkaban by removing all the Dementors from prison.

Eldritch's role as the head of the British Wizarding World was the last time the Diggory family ever had a taste of relevance, which is why Cedric was considered such a prodigy as the star pupil at Hogwarts.

Cedric being chosen as Hogwarts's champion brings glory to the Diggory name after centuries, which his father saw as validation for his belief Cedric was destined for big things in the future.

Cedric's Passing Left The Diggory Family Without An Heir

It's unconfirmed if the Diggory family is pure-blood, but all indications suggest they are. Eldritch Diggory's role as Minister for Magic in the 18th century when pure-blood supremacy was extremely high alludes to him as a pure-blood, while the pro-pure-blood Slytherins' support of Cedric in the Triwizard Tournament also validates the claim.

Pure-blood families are rare in the present day, and the latest member of the Diggory family is known to be Cedric. His passing leaves Amos Diggory and his wife all alone since they had no other children. By the events of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Amos is living in a retirement home because he has no children to take care of him.

The Hogwarts Hippogriff Club is among the most elite clubs a student can be a member of because it includes wizards who have proven mastery in potions, care of magical creatures, divination, and herbology.

Cedric was part of the club during his time at Hogwarts, whose past members include other highly talented alumni like Charlie Weasley and Nymphadora Tonks. The Hogwarts Hippogriff Club gives benefits and opportunities to members beyond Hogwarts, so Cedric was in a good position to pursue a career dedicated to those subjects.

Cedric Proved Immune To Veela Charms

Veela aren't actually human but rather humanoid beings that can activate a different appearance if they want; they also have powers that activate a charm to make them irresistible to people of the opposite gender.

Fleur Delacour is part Veela and possesses the charm ability of her kind, which she activates around Cedric when she asks him to be her date for the Yule Ball. Cedric is somehow completely immune to Fleur's charms and politely turns her down in favor of pursuing Cho Chang.

Cedric is the only man known to have actively denied a Veela when their powers have been activated, which alludes to his indomitable willpower.

Cedric Was Both A Prefect And Quidditch Captain

Prefects and Quidditch captains have the same status, and it's unusual for one student to be handed both duties. Apart from a few exceptional wizards like Charlie Weasley, hardly anyone becomes prefect and a captain, but Cedric achieves both honors.

Cedric's case is even more unique because he was chosen for both roles in the same year. Prior to his fifth year, Cedric received news he was picked as prefect and Quidditch captain, which contributes to why his father became so high-minded about him.

Cedric passed in his sixth year, but his placing as Triwizard champion would have essentially guaranteed his being chosen as Head Boy the following year.
