Hermione Granger easily makes the top of many Harry Potter fans' lists when it comes to choosing their favorite character. A lot of that has to do with Emma Watson's portrayal of Hermione in the Harry Potter film series, although that version doesn't fully reflect how she is in the source material. While Hermione remains a protagonist and high achiever, moviegoers will be surprised by some dark aspects to her, in addition to several other subplots that were cut out of the films.

All things considered, the book and film versions of Hermione can feel like different people altogether when vital characteristics and plot points about her are taken into context.

Hermione can be extremely ruthless when it comes to protecting what she believes in - the most notable example is the parchment containing the Dumbledore's Army members' names.

Hermione tells no one - including Harry and Ron - she's secretly cursed the parchment. It's hexed in such a way the person who blabs about the faction's existence will have a breakout of pustules on their face that reads "SNEAK."

Marietta Edgecombe betrays the group by snitching to Dolores Umbridge, only to be cursed instantly. Hermione shows no remorse for what happens to Marietta, who's left with the curse for the rest of her life.

Rita Skeeter looks to exploit Harry's tragic background during the Triwizard Tournament, for which she gets confronted by Hermione. Rita retaliates by concocting a love triangle between Hermione, Harry, and Viktor Krum - it turns the Wizarding World against Hermione, who receives hate mail and threats against her life for supposedly playing with Harry and Krum's feelings.

Hermione gets her revenge when she realizes Rita is an unregistered Animagus in the form of a beetle, then traps her in a jar. Hermione releases Rita in London but blackmails her with the threat she will expose her truth to the Ministry of Magic, which would get Rita sent to Azkaban.

Arranging a deal where Rita gets to return to journalism, Hermione ends her rivalry with Rita under the condition the journalist publishes an exposé detailing the truth behind Voldemort's return by interviewing Harry.

Hermione's plan works because the resulting article starts to shift perception of the Wizarding World in Harry's favor, while also ridding them of Rita's libel once and for all.

Hermione's proficiency in studies is best reflected in her O.W.L. results, where she outclasses every student decisively in terms of overall grading. Hermione receives an "outstanding" in 10 subjects, but receives an "exceeds expectations" in Defense Against the Dark Arts - Harry is the only student who receives an "outstanding" in that subject.

Hermione's 11 pass grades are unmatched in her year, including every student from the four houses; however, she's still disappointed because she feels she didn't do enough to receive the "outstanding" grade in Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Malfoy's curse hits Hermione in the face and causes her teeth to grow unnaturally large. Severus Snape punishes Harry but not Malfoy out of his bias, then insults Hermione by claiming he sees no difference.

Hermione's disfigurement causes her to flee the scene to the hospital wing, where Madam Pomfrey repairs her teeth - Hermione then decides to let Pomfrey shrink her teeth more than they originally were so she didn't need braces as her parents wanted.

Hermione's First Kiss Is Revealed To Be Viktor Krum

Hermione's First Kiss Is Revealed To Be Viktor Krum
Photo: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 / Warner Bros. Pictures

Hermione's date with Viktor Krum was the beginning of a short-lived romance between the pair, which is mainly implied because Goblet of Fire is told through Harry's point of view. She claims she and Viktor remain pen pals after he returns to Bulgaria, but doesn't elaborate on how their relationship had worked previously.

Half-Blood Prince goes further when Ginny reveals Krum was Hermione's first kiss, which took place when they were seeing each other during the Triwizard Tournament. The pair had become so serious Krum wanted Hermione to visit him in Bulgaria, but it ultimately didn't work out.

The revelation of the kiss is what sets off Ron against Hermione because he's jealous Krum wooed the girl he's interested in.
