Lily and James Potter aren't there during the present-day events of the Harry Potter series, but the impact of their actions remains throughout. Their time at Hogwarts and as part of the Order of the Phoenix are detailed as the story moves forward, although some aspects can't be found in the books. Similarly, the movie series doesn't do their characters justice because a lot of core points are eliminated, which are needed to truly understand how their personalities are supposed to be.

Some details paint their relationship in an entirely different context while others can make them appear more or less sympathetic to fans.

James's Family Took In Sirius To Live With Them, And James Later Did The Same With Remus

Sirius Black was something like Lily's brother-in-law after her marriage to James because he was taken in by the Potters as an adolescent. Sometime after his fifth year, Sirius ran away from his family and went to James's place; James's parents were more than happy to have him.

James and Sirius lived together at this time, with the two growing close enough to consider each other as brothers. Sirius eventually went on to buy his own place; by then, Remus Lupin came to stay with James. As a werewolf, Remus was unable to gain employment, and he was financially supported by James.

It's implied Remus stayed with James and Lily during the initial phase of the couple's marriage until Order of the Phoenix duties took Remus away.

James and Lily never really got to celebrate married life because they were sent into hiding months after their wedding. Lily became pregnant not long into their marriage, which was when Sybill Trelawney made the prophecy about Harry's birth.

Albus Dumbledore thought ahead and sent Lily and James to hide in Godric's Hollow long before Harry was born, and the Potters remained there long afterward, as well. Harry's birth took place in July 1980, while Voldemort eliminated Lily and James in October 1981. Since they were in hiding early into Lily's pregnancy, the pair spent almost two years out of the public eye.

James and Lily met with Petunia and Vernon Dursley after the latter couple was engaged. James went along for Lily's benefit because she hoped to reconcile with her sister. The double date ended in disaster, however, because Vernon repeatedly attempted to one-up James.

Vernon bragged about his new car and job; James responded by pointing out he had a fortune at Gringotts and his broomstick could fly much faster than Vernon's car could go. Vernon felt insulted when he had no comeback and stormed out with Petunia - the disastrous meeting led to Vernon's resentment toward James for the rest of his life.

Harry doesn't have any relatives apart from Petunia Dursley to live with because his grandparents passed before he was born. James and Lily's parents were very close to meeting their grandchild, as they attended their children's wedding.

James's parents, Fleamont and Euphemia Potter, were quite elderly by the time their son married but were able to make the ceremony. However, the pair lost their lives to the Dragon Pox disease that affects wizards not long after and never saw their only grandson.

Lily's parents' passing occurred just after their second daughter's wedding, although it's not known what claimed their lives around the same time as each other.

At their wedding, Vernon and Petunia Dursley looked to get back at Lily and James for the disastrous double date. At the event, Petunia refused to have Lily as her bridesmaid, which greatly distressed the latter.

Vernon took things to even pettier levels when he had a loud conversation with people while James was standing nearby, claiming he's an "amateur magician" as a way of belittling them. In fact, Vernon didn't even acknowledge James's presence at the wedding, choosing to pretend he wasn't there when he badmouthed him to others.

Harry is never appointed either as a prefect or as the head student at Hogwarts, but his mother was both. Lily's status as a star student was punctuated by her placement as a prefect in her fifth year, then as the school's Head Girl in her final year.

James's was a special case in the school's history - he was considered to be a troublemaker in his fifth year and passed over for the prefect position; however, James became Head Boy just two years later.

So far, James is the only student known to be the Head Boy without ever being appointed as a prefect.
