The Wizarding World in the Harry Potter series features various branches of magic that even many witches and wizards don't understand completely. Apparition, potion-making, transfiguration, and the physics of magic all have deeper details that the books generally don't go into.

It's fascinating to see what the history behind the magic is and how its mysterious forms can be rationalized based on known facts about the Wizarding World.

The Disillusionment Charm Is Used To Hide Hippogriffs In Plain Sight

Self-disillusionment charms are so difficult that only the most powerful wizards like Voldemort, Albus Dumbledore, and Gellert Grindelwald can accomplish them perfectly. On the other hand, disillusionment charms used on other things and creatures aren't as difficult.

In fact, wizards openly keep Hippogriffs outside by using the disillusionment charm, which renders the creatures as part of the environment. So Hippogriffs can be anywhere in the Muggle world without nonmagical people being aware of them.

Voldemort Created A Spell That Allows Him To Fly

Unsupported flight was considered an impossibility in the Wizarding World ever since magic was founded until Lord Voldemort created history by becoming able to fly on his own.

Those who witness Voldemort flying are astounded and wonder if his body's physiology is altered. In truth, Voldemort is able to fly because he came up with a spell that allowed him to do so.

The incantation for the flying spell is unknown, but it's confirmed that it can be taught because Severus Snape later demonstrates it as well. Also, the spell isn't a variation of the movement or levitation spells - it's an original piece of magic invented by Voldemort.

Reversing A Horcrux Is So Demanding That Wizards Might Instead Choose To Die

Creating a Horcrux is among the hardest spells because it requires slaying someone, then splitting one's own soul. Even more difficult is restoring the soul, which requires true remorse.

The incantation behind it isn't known, but the person needs to have it in mind to merge back the splintered soul with the true soul. The process is so demanding that a person who undergoes this restorative magic is likely to choose death.

Herpo the Foul, creator of the Horcrux, is the only known person apart from Voldemort to have split his soul. He chose to die when he merged his soul back together, confirming that it is the most physically and mentally difficult magic to complete.

Potions And Transfiguration Are Essential For Becoming An Animagus

Potions And Transfiguration Are Essential For Becoming An Animagus

It's no wonder that so few wizards become Animagi: the process is nearly impossible to achieve and requires extreme precision and luck. Potions and transfiguration are a must because they are used for the ingredients and magic to take effect.

The first step is to carry a single leaf of a mandrake in the mouth for an entire month from full moon to full moon. The leaf can't be swallowed or removed at any time during the month, then has to be deposited in a small crystal phial that has received moonlight. The wizard's hairs should be added to the phial.

The next step is to add a teaspoon of dew that is from somewhere no sunlight has reached and no human has stepped on. Then, a seven-day waiting period starts during which the chrysalis of a Death's-head hawkmoth must be added to the phial. The mixture must be transferred to a quiet, dark place until the next electrical storm.

The third step is to use the wand at the tip of the heart and recite the incantation "Amato Animo Animato Animagus" every day at dawn and dusk until the electrical storm happens - a time will arrive when the wizard will feel two heartbeats.

The next step begins when lightning appears in the sky, at which point the wizard has to retrieve the crystal phial - there will be a blood-red potion inside it now.

The fifth step is to place the wand at the tip of the heart and repeat "Amato Animo Animato Animagus" before drinking the potion - an intense pain will be experienced.

The sixth step is to brave through the sensation of transformation because the wizard will see the creature they will turn into in their minds and be struck by fear.

The last step is when the transformation takes place and the wizard becomes their Animagus form. A wand is mandatory at this time to revert back into human form because the Animagus will not be able to change back immediately.

Ater transforming multiple times, a person can finally change at will without needing a wand.

Ancient Magic Is Derived From The Nature Of The Universe

Contrary to popular belief, ancient magic isn't magic that is no longer used; rather, it is magic that has always existed and remains in the fabric of the universe.

Magical power is derived from everything around a wizard and can take effect at any point if the wizard is successful in harnessing the power. It is said to be part of the "magical-ness" of the universe.

The love protection Harry experiences through Lily even after her demise is ancient magic and continues to exist because the magic was always there - Lily's sacrifice simply activated it.

The Only Ones Who Can Permanently Complete Vanishing Spells Are Those Who Understand The Concept Of Vanishment

The Only Ones Who Can Permanently Complete Vanishing Spells Are Those Who Understand The Concept Of Vanishment
Photo: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire / Warner Bros. Pictures

Vanishing magic is taught at Hogwarts from the first year itself, but students can either only partially accomplish it or do enough for the spell to last a few minutes. True vanishing magic is extremely complex because the witch or wizard needs to understand what vanishment is supposed to be.

Professor McGonagall is a powerful witch whose vanishing spells remain working. During the Battle of Hogwarts, she explains that vanishing entails something going "into non-being, which is to say, everything."

Not understanding clearly the concept of vanishment is why things like common invisibility cloaks lose their magic in due course - the Deathly Hallows Invisibility Cloak is created from a magic cast with a perfect execution of the concept.
