Things You Didn't Know About Lord Voldemort If You've Only Seen The Movies

Vote up the most sinister details about Voldemort.

Lord Voldemort comes across as something of a hammy villain for movie fans of the Harry Potter series because the villain tends to be loud and relatively one-note in personality. Voldemort from the books will seem like a different character altogether to those who have only seen the movie series - he's dastardly, conniving, scary, and pure evil.

The books reveal in greater depth plenty of details about Voldemort's personality that lead to a greater understanding of his character.

Voldemort's Body Is Carried Away After He Perishes

The entire point of eliminating the Horcruxes was for Voldemort to become human once more, and his body reflects this fact. After he's defeated by Harry, the killing curse hits Voldemort to render his body immobile, which confirms he's perished.

The Battle of Hogwarts claims more than 50 lives, many of them the brave combatants who fought for the heroes. As a result, Voldemort's body is moved away so he doesn't lie with the people who sacrificed themselves to fight him.

Voldemort's body is shifted to the room off the Great Hall, where it remains presumably until the bodies of the heroes are taken away for burial.

Voldemort's Only Job Was When He Worked At Borgin And Burkes

The final known presence of Tom Riddle in the Wizarding World before he became Voldemort was when he worked as a shop assistant at Borgin and Burkes. Tom was offered exceptional jobs at the Ministry of Magic before he had even graduated but turned them all down.

Tom's job title at Borgin and Burkes doesn't reflect his actual work - he was used for his persausiveness and charm in purchasing items of importance for the shop. This is the only job he ever had in his life; he disappears after he poisons Hepzibah Smith to claim Hufflepuff's cup and Slytherin's locket.

His employers, Mr. Borgin and Mr. Burkes, are surprised by Tom's sudden resignation, which he doesn't deliver in person; they are the last people to have heard from him. The next time the Wizarding World publicly sees this man, he's abandoned the Tom Riddle identity to be known as Lord Voldemort.

Voldemort Applies To Become A Teacher At Hogwarts Multiple Times

A position as a teacher at Hogwarts is the only job that Voldemort ever really desired as a career. In fact, his first move after graduation is to head to the headmaster's office and ask Armando Dippet for a post as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.

Hogwarts has a minimum three-year experience requirement and a minimum age of 21; Tom Riddle doesn't meet either requirement, and he's rejected. Voldemort doesn't let go of the notion, however, and returns more than 20 years later to try again.

Voldemort finds Albus Dumbledore as the headmaster by then; he claims he's old enough and the reputation he's cultivated by then speaks for itself in relation to his skills.

Voldemort is insulted when Dumbledore turns him down because the latter promises he will never let a dark wizard like him anywhere near the school; Voldemort jinxes the Defense Against the Dark Arts position so that no one holds the post for longer than a year.

Voldemort Accidentally Gives Away His True Nature To Dumbledore Upon Their First Meeting

Voldemort's fear of Albus Dumbledore isn't due to the latter's magical skill, but because he knows of Voldemort's past as Tom Marvolo Riddle, the child from the orphanage.

Tom doesn't reveal his evil actions at the orphanage to anyone else, which makes Dumbledore the only one who's aware of his misdeeds. Tom makes the mistake of becoming too emotional when Dumbledore tells him he's a wizard upon their first meeting and lives to regret it.

Tom tells Dumbledore he's a Parselmouth and that he's used his powers to harm children he's antagonized; Dumbledore takes note of these details, and Voldemort is fearful for the rest of his life that Dumbledore knows his deep secret.

Voldemort's overly enthusiastic reaction as a child and subsequent admission of what he'd done in the cave is what leads Dumbledore to that location in search of the locket Horcrux.

Harry Gives Voldemort A Chance To Repent His Sins Before Their Final Duel

Harry Gives Voldemort A Chance To Repent His Sins Before Their Final Duel
Photo: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 / Warner Bros. Pictures

In the climactic moment of Deathly Hallows, Harry protects everyone in the Great Hall with the power of his love that prevents Voldemort from harming them. Voldemort is left confused and angered when Harry reveals the truth of Snape's allegiance.

Harry is well aware that Voldemort will go for the killing curse when he's done talking, but rattles Voldemort further when he asks the latter to feel remorseful for his crimes. More than anything else, Voldemort is shaken by Harry's suggestion; he even asks Harry what he means by it.

Harry, who has seen Voldemort's soul fragment in limbo by then, takes pity on his greatest adversary and appeals to any shred of humanity left in Voldemort so he can avoid that fate. The Dark Lord takes Harry's words as an insult - he then sends the killing curse toward Harry, which ultimately rebounds to cause his demise.
