List of all possible thyroid conditions and diseases. What is thyroid disease? A thyroid disease is a medical condition impairing the function of the thyroid. Imbalance in production of thyroid hormones arises from dysfunction of the thyroid gland itself, the pituitary gland, which produces thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), or the hypothalamus, which regulates the pituitary gland via thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). Concentrations of TSH increase with age, requiring age-corrected tests. Hypothyroidism affects between three and ten percent of adults, with incidence higher in women and the elderly

Hyperthyroidism, also known as overactive thyroid and hyperthyreosis, is the condition that occurs due to excessive production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. Thyrotoxicosis is the condition that occurs due to excessive thyroid hormone of any cause and thus includes hyperthyroidism. The opposite is hypothyroidism, which is the reduced production and secretion of T3 and/or T4. Graves' disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Some people develop thyrotoxicosis due to inflammation of the thyroid gland, which can lead to excessive release of thyroid hormone already stored in the gland. This may include triiodothyronine and/or thyroxine. Thyrotoxicosis can also occur after ...more on Wikipedia
