The Bitter Feud Between Scientology Alpha Males Tom Cruise And John Travolta

Updated June 14, 2018 24.8k views13 items

The guarded nature of Scientology lends itself to wild rumors about what goes on in the church. Accounts from former Sea Org members and harrowing escape stories from Scientology abound, and they are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the outlandish stories of L. Ron Hubbard's religion.

Brendan Tighe, a lifelong member of the church, unceremoniously cut ties with the organization in 2011. In 2018, he gave a few interviews where he provided insight into the long-rumored Tom Cruise John Travolta feud.

Despite being little more than unsubstantiated rumors, Tighe’s claims come from an almost decade-long run as a member of Tom Cruise’s Florida security team. Tighe’s stories about Tom Cruise and John Travolta cover how the stars handle themselves within the church and how Travolta feels about Cruise receiving so much attention from the church’s leader, David Miscavige.

The Entire Feud Could Be Fabricated

Because of the tight-lipped nature of Scientology, it's nearly impossible to discern what's real and what's fiction in stories from former members. Stories about the church are guaranteed to pique the interest of readers, so when Brendan Tighe spoke to Australian magazine New Idea about a feud between two of the biggest stars in the world it's no surprise that the story took on a life of its own.

However, Tighe arguably has very little to gain from this story going viral. Opponents of Scientology – or Suppressive Persons – are considered Fair Game. This Scientology intimidation tactic was allegedly repealed back in 1968, but many former members of Scientology have horror stories about how the group stalked them, harassed them, and even framed them for violent crimes after they left and spoke out against the church.

  • Tighe Claims Cruise Doesn't Say Hi To Anyone

Brendan Tighe worked as a member of the security team that kept close tabs on Cruise for seven years, and in that amount of time he was able to study just how the star treated the people around him. Tighe says Cruise "kept to himself... even if he was on a course with 200 people, he'd have a three-person security buffer from anyone."

This behavior is antithetical to the personable way in which Tighe alleges Travolta carries himself. To be fair, however, Tighe reportedly only had casual run-ins with Travolta.

  • Cruise Allegedly Made Tighe Get His Teeth Whitened

Brendan Tighe revealed that, if you're going to hang around Cruise, then you need to look as good as possible. Tighe claims he had to have his teeth whitened in order to "have a good smile for Tom Cruise."

  • Leah Remini Thinks Cruise Despises Travolta

A case can definitely be made that Brendan Tighe is getting his 15 minutes of fame by feeding the rumor mill regarding a Travolta/Cruise rivalry, but he's not the only person making these claims. In 2015, former Scientologist Leah Remini said she's heard Cruise "doesn't like" either Travolta or Kirstie Alley. Remini says that despite both Travolta's and Alley's high level in the church, neither were invited to Cruise's wedding to Katie Holmes.
