We rarely hear about female&nbsp;Nazis from the days of the Holocaust, but they did exist and one&nbsp;of the worst was undeniably&nbsp;Ilse Koch. Koch acted as a guard over the concentration camp at Buchenwald, where she tortured, killed, mutilated, and constantly taunted inmates. She was flippant with her <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/nazi-experiments/jacob-shelton" target="_blank">sadism</a>, given the nickname The Beast of Buchenwald, and her husband,&nbsp;the Commandant, was equally evil. Some of the atrocities Koch committed are enough to make even those with strong stomachs squirm.Please keep in mind that some of what you read here is graphic and disturbing, so this is not for the faint of heart. Far from making the monstrous dictator sympathetic, they somehow make his evil even more apparent. He was from a huge mess of a family, with an elderly father who had uncertain parentage. He was impossibly vain and paranoid about his image and the sound of his voice. He was both a teetotaler and a drug addict. He had a taste for young women, yet was totally uninterested in sex. And he was a tax cheat, skimming money from the Nazi party to buy luxury goods unavailable to most Germans. Although it took a world war and one hundred million deaths to eradicate Nazism, many mysteries were left behind by this strange and terrible movement. Some involved mysterious things the Nazis did, others involved twisted beliefs or obsessive greed for artwork and items of great spiritual or historical significance. Hitler's obsession with Germany's destiny, racial purity, and ritual attracted followers with similarly bizarre attitudes and core beliefs. It is not surprising that 70 years later we are still unraveling Nazi mysteries and weird Nazi stories, some that have never been solved or fully explained, and some that, while we have an answer, remain mysterious. This list details the mysterious legacy of this dark and dreadful era.

Nazi Germany didn't just seek to eradicate those who didn't meet the criteria of their ideal race. They also fought to create a super genetic line through selective breeding in the ultra-secret, undeniably twisted Lebensborn program. It was akin to <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/facts-about-josef-mengele/jacob-shelton" target="_blank">Josef Mengele's concentration camp experiments</a> to the extent that it involved Nazi &quot;science&quot; and a total lack of bioethics.This program, created by the SS, was a state-supported, registered association sparked by the shrinking birth rate in Nazi Germany. Lebensborn mothers faced a moral predicament. While many already were fervent followers of Hitler, for some, it was a matter of survival in war-torn, Nazi-occupied Europe. The Lebensborn program attempted to breed racial purity through a very specific set of phenotypic criteria. The children of Lebensborn were often kidnapped from their Nordic and Eastern European families, forced to erase their past identities&nbsp;and be reborn as Hitler youth. For many, their lives were lies, and they only discovered their origins in adulthood, if at all. Here's a look inside the twisted Nazi program to breed a master race and what happened to the Lebensborn survivors when the war was finally over.

Female members of the Nazi Party like <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/ilse-koch-concentration-camp-guard/laura-allan" target="_blank">Ilse&nbsp;Koch</a>&nbsp;committed equally heinous atrocities as Nazi men.&nbsp;Aufseherinnen&nbsp;SS, or female Nazi concentration camp guards, could be just as ruthless as their male counterparts &mdash;&nbsp;a fact that is often overlooked.

Female Nazis oversaw women prisoners (their name literally means &quot;overseer inside&quot;) and were first stationed at the female concentration camp at&nbsp;Ravensbr&uuml;ck. They were later&nbsp;sent out to various parts of the Third Reich when manpower was lacking. <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=DqNPJl439dwC&amp;pg=PA231&amp;dq=Aufseherinnen&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjN4aHGlfnZAhVIVK0KHVZJC20Q6AEIKTAA#v=onepage&amp;q=Aufseherinnen&amp;f=false" target="_blank">As a group within the&nbsp;SS</a> (or Schutzstaffel, the Nazi paramilitary corps), many&nbsp;Aufsherinnen&nbsp;were able to achieve high rank and wield significant influence in Nazi camps.&nbsp;

The actions&nbsp;of the&nbsp;3,000-4,000&nbsp;Aufsherinnen&nbsp;varied greatly: some women were highly&nbsp;dedicated to the Nazi cause while others were conscripted and coerced into their position, but the women came from <a href="https://kuscholarworks.ku.edu/bitstream/handle/1808/18671/Cline_ku_0099D_13813_DATA_1.pdf;s" target="_blank">similar backgrounds</a>. Members of the Augsherinnen were usually unattached, worked as bakers, factory workers, or on farms, and, after the war, were able to fade into the background of post-Nazi Germany. The highest ranking Augsherinnen, however, had to answer for their actions and were tried for their crimes.

Hitler was a cruel dictator, a proponent of genocide, and a mass murderer. He also liked to plan ahead - when <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/what-happened-after-hitler-committed-suicide/philgibbons" target="_blank">Hitler committed suicide&nbsp;in his bunker</a> under Berlin, he left detailed plans for Germany's future, including the role religion would play in the Third Reich. Hitler's plans for post-war Germany&nbsp;contained shocking details about his religious views.Similar to how the <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/julfest-christmas-in-nazi-germany/genevieve-carlton" target="_blank">Nazis removed Christ from Christmas</a>, Hitler intended to tear down Christianity to establish his reputation as &quot;Germany's Jesus Christ.&quot; He would start with replacing crucifixes with portraits of himself, followed by throwing religious dissidents in concentration camps. Hitler's plot also included the staged assassination of the pope and an alliance with Middle Eastern Muslims against Jewish people&nbsp;and the British.&nbsp;To Hitler, religion was a thorn in his side threatening to pull people's loyalty from the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Party's Minister of Propaganda, was a family man. He and his wife, Magda, had six children together and, despite lots of ups and downs in their relationship, stayed together until the end.Adolf Hitler, who eventually <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/adolf-hitler-eva-braun-wedding/cleo-egnal" target="_blank">married longtime girlfriend Eva Braun</a>, never had any children of his own and&nbsp;Joseph Goebbels's children were some of Hitler's favorite people. As the Nazi state fell apart, he invited his closest associates into his bunker with him, including the Goebbels&nbsp;children. In April 1945, Hitler committed suicide in the bunker, taking poison –&nbsp;that he'd tested on <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/hitler-poisoned-dog-blondi/rylee_en" target="_blank">his dog,&nbsp;Blondi, first&nbsp;</a>–&nbsp;and then shooting himself. In the <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/what-happened-after-hitler-committed-suicide/philgibbons" target="_blank">aftermath of Hitler's death</a>, the Goebbels turned to poison as well, killing their children before taking their own lives.&nbsp;

The Hitler Youth was the sole official youth organization of Nazi Germany. Think there&#39;s something unsettling about&nbsp;children dressed up in uniforms to celebrate and impress one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-all-time-worst-people-in-history" target="_blank">most evil people who ever lived</a>? These creepy Hitler Youth photos present an overview of a particularly disturbing element of Nazi Germany. Soon, the Reich&nbsp;outlawed all other youth organizations - including the Boy Scouts, on which the Hitlerjugend (HJ) was based.<a href="https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/hitler-youth" target="_blank"> In&nbsp;1939</a>, all German youths were automatically conscripted at the age of 17. By 1941, all Aryans over the age of 10 were forced to participate. A significant majority <a href="https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/guides/z2p3k2p/revision/10" target="_blank">chose not to participate in HJ</a>, and some groups even vocalized and publicized their anti-Nazi beliefs. However, this protest often ended in executions. If not, it was sure that youth who were not members of the HJ would have a difficult time entering university or finding jobs.&nbsp; It certainly wasn&#39;t the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/nazi-experiments/jacob-shelton" target="_blank">worst part of Nazi Germany</a>, but still, the whole ordeal was downright nuts.

To those born&nbsp;after the Cold War era, it&#39;s hard to imagine a time when the entire world wasn&#39;t aware of the atrocious medical experiments conducted in Germany. When we look back on the medical experiments of World&nbsp;War II, it may be easy to feel like we&#39;re <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/nazi-mysteries/philgibbons" target="_blank">reading science fiction</a>. The emotions felt by descendants of Nazis attest to the complexity of family relationships. A partial replica of Hitler&#39;s F&uuml;hrerbunker&nbsp;can be toured in Berlin, only a mile from the original 3,000-square-foot bunker where Hitler, Eva Braun, and the Goebbels family <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/what-happened-after-hitler-committed-suicide/philgibbons" target="_blank">offed themselves</a> as the Russians advanced and the realization set in that their regime had fallen. Though the original bunker has been mostly destroyed and sits beneath a parking lot, plenty of tourists have shown interest in seeing the inside of the F&uuml;hrerbunker.&nbsp;

The exhibit&#39;s opening was met with critics&nbsp;saying that the faux bunker glorified and humanized Hitler. This is in line with how much of the world feels about portraying Hitler; auction houses like Sotheby&#39;s&nbsp;won&#39;t even deal in <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/nazi-relics-you-can-visit-in-the-us/brian-guthrie" target="_blank">Nazi relics</a>, and movies about Hitler have been met with vitriol.&nbsp;

But those running the exhibit see things differently, saying that a holistic and truthful picture of World War II&nbsp;as a whole means seeing Hitler as more than a supervillain, particularly as many German children don&#39;t get the true story of Hitler&#39;s rise. <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/nazi-bell-germany-controversy-1.4287318" target="_blank">Some tour guides</a> have had to tell students that Hitler was the one killing the Jews, not vice versa. Accordingly, the last 10&nbsp;years have seen more representations of Hitler &mdash;&nbsp;and most importantly the German people&#39;s culpability &mdash;&nbsp;in response to rising German nationalism.

As one of the exhibit&#39;s <a href="http://allthatsinteresting.com/berlin-museum-recreates-hitler-bunker" target="_blank">curators said</a>, the people put Hitler into power &mdash;&nbsp;he didn&#39;t seize it. The German people were all too ready to enable Hitler&#39;s rise to power.

The Holocaust was a horrific time in human history, but also a time of great bravery and kindness. As the Nazis expanded their reach and tightened their grip on Europe, they worked to systematically destroy populations of people within their borders they felt were undesirable. For the most part, the Nazis focused their effort on Jewish people, who were rounded up and put into ghettos, then eventually shipped to concentration camps. Millions died. But&nbsp;luckily, there are stories of people who hid from the Nazis during World War II&nbsp;and managed to stay hidden until the end of the war.

Thanks to underground resistance movements, the cunning of ordinary folks, and the courageous help of friends, numerous people went into hiding&nbsp;and stayed out of the Nazi&#39;s grasp. Many managed to stay safe until the Allies liberated Europe, though others weren&#39;t so fortunate. The Nazis were relentless in their pursuit, and many&nbsp;courageous souls&nbsp;were discovered. Still, there are some spectacular accounts below from people who hid from the Nazis,&nbsp;survived WWII, and lived to pass on the&nbsp;stories.

Why didn&rsquo;t someone kill Adolf Hitler? The world might have looked very different in 1945 if Hitler had been taken out a decade earlier.&nbsp;In fact, there were at least 42 Hitler assassination attempts, and many more plots to kill Hitler that have never been uncovered. And just like the <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/crazy-fidel-castro-assassination-attempts/hugh-landman " target="_blank">wild plots to take out Fidel Castro</a>, some of the Hitler assassination plots were incredibly creative.

The best known failed attempt was the 1944 plot&nbsp;that blew up his Wolf&#39;s Lair&nbsp;command center. But there were many other&nbsp;attempts, some of which should be on the list of the <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/bizarre-assassination-attempts/philgibbons " target="_blank">most bizarre assassination attempts in history</a>. One assassin gave Hitler a rabid puppy. Another threw deadly roses at the F&uuml;hrer. After so many near misses, Hitler was paranoid about assassination attempts.&nbsp;The&nbsp;F&uuml;hrer&nbsp;had&nbsp;his <a href="http://warfarehistorynetwork.com/daily/wwii/the-raf-attempt-to-assassinate-adolf-hitler/" target="_blank">food</a>&nbsp;and water was tested for toxic substances every day.

The greatest danger came from Hitler&#39;s own countrymen, as German citizens and even Nazi officers plotted against him.&nbsp;Several plots to blow Hitler up nearly succeeded, like when a disgruntled German officer snuck an explosive device onto Hitler&rsquo;s plane, disguising it as two bottles of brandy.

So how did Hitler die? It wasn&rsquo;t the explosives in his speaker&rsquo;s podium or the shot into his car. In the end, Hitler took his own life. After Hitler&rsquo;s passing, his chauffeur <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/what-happened-after-hitler-committed-suicide/philgibbons" target="_blank">siphoned gas and burned the F&uuml;hrer&rsquo;s body</a>. Sadly, many lost their lives in the dozens of attempts to terminate&nbsp;Hitler.
