List of gross torture methods used in medieval times. These medieval torture devices were some of the most sadistic machines in history, like the Judas cradle, pear of anguish, and Spanish donkey torture that were used to inflict anguish on convicts, hostages, and disagreeable folks. History books call them horrific forms of  torture, but I can think of several people who could stand a few hours on/in at least a few of these devices. . . just kidding, of course. Read through this list of horrifying types of medieval punishment and be thankful that you were more a couple millennia after their presence.

The Breast Ripper

Used as a way to punish women, the breast ripper was a painful and cruel way to mutilate a woman's breasts.

The claws were used either hot or cold on the victim's exposed breasts. If the victim wasn't killed she would be scarred for life as her breasts were literally torn apart.

A common variant of the breast ripper is often referred to as "The Spider" which is a similar instrument attached to a wall. The victim's breasts were fixed to the claws and the woman was pulled by the torturer away from the wall; successfully removing both breasts.

Please excuse me for a moment - the "girls" and I need some quality time.

Reaching the peak of its popularity during the Spanish Inquisition of the 1600s, this was also known as the Judas Chair or the Guilded Cradle. The Judas Cradle was a torture device where the victim would be placed on top of a wooden pyramid with the triangular end inserted in the victim's anus or vagina. Arms and feet were tied or weighted in order to ensure maximum pain as the victim slowly descended.

More often than not, the Judas Cradle was used to extract confessions or specific information from victims, so the addition of weights could increase the horror. Depending on the rate of the pyramid-sitter's progress, this torture could last anywhere from a few hours to a full day.

While the torture was not usually intended to be fatal, it often was. The device was never cleaned, resulting in a high incidence of infection, which was often basically a death sentence in the centuries before antibiotics.

The brazen bull was a hard-boiled device invented in Ancient Greece wherein a victim placed inside was slowly burned to death. This device gradually became more sophisticated until the Greeks invented a complex system of tubes that made the victim's screams sound like an infuriated ox.

Even though this torture was not used as frequently during the Middle Ages as it was used earlier by the Greek and Romans, it was still used in Central Europe. This torture is similar to being boiled alive.

Some bulls were equipped with a removable back end, thereby making is possible to remove the entree through the Angus anus.

The Iron Maiden, otherwise known as the Virgin of Nuremberg, was a device used from the 16th Century to torture criminals.

It stood 7 feet tall and could accommodate a large man. The victim was tied inside the Maiden, which contained strategically placed spikes. Once the doors were closed, the spikes penetrated the victim's flesh without hitting any vital organs

When the device was completely sealed, the screams from the victim could not be heard outside, nor could the victim hear any external noise or see light. Additionally, the spikes blocked the wounds, so it took many hours - or even days - for the sweet release of death.
