The top billionaires of 2013 were the absolutest richest people on the planet during the year. Between those who earned their riches, inherited their wealth, are in the process of giving it away and all of the above combined, these are the wealthiest individuals and families in the world in 2013 as ranked by Forbes.
When compared to the top billionaires of 2012, the list has changed only slightly at the top. Carlos Slim Helo, the Mexican telcom mogul and Microsoft pioneer Bill Gates both kept their spots as one and two, respectively. A few new billionaires broke into the top five however, including Amancio Ortega, whose Spanish clothing retailer Zara brought him a cool $57 billion dollars for the third spot on this list, up from fifth last year.In a trend that would make many cringe, many also dropped spots. Warren Buffett, for example, dropped one spot to fourth on this list, despite his net worth of $53.5 billion. Buffett, like many on this list such as Paul Allen, Michael Bloomberg, Carl Icahn and Mark Zuckerberg, to name a few, have all pledged to dedicate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy as part of The Giving Pledge. It might drop them off this list, which requires a minimum net worth above $10 billion just to crack the top 100, but their generosity could change the world.
