List Rules Vote up the discounted cell phone plans that are best for folks over age 55.

Senior discounts are one of the perks of getting older and nowadays they extend beyond getting a couple bucks off a meal at your favorite restaurant. Several cell phone carriers offer discounted cell phone plans for seniors, offering special rates to customers aged 55 or older.

Nowadays even older folks use smartphones to take pictures and text, and most senior cell phone plans take that into account, offering unlimited data. Like most cell phone plans, discounted or not, some carriers do de-prioritize customers who use over a certain amount within a billing period, slowing their data.

For folks who don't necessarily need unlimited plans, options like Consumer Cellular have flexible plan options you can pick and choose from to build a phone plan that best fits your lifestyle.  Although Consumer Cellular doesn't offer a specific deal for seniors, they do have a 5% discount available for AARP members.

If you don't plan to use any data, the AT&T Senior Nation Plan isn't compatible with smartphones or tablets but offers 200 anytime minutes and 500 night and weekend minutes at a reduced price to customers over age 65.

The most robust plan for smartphone users may be Verizon GO Unlimited Plan for Seniors. Available to customers age 55 or older, this plan offers unlimited data, messages, and nationwide calling. With "national minutes" defined to include Canada, Mexico, and the United States - plus no specific slow down penalizations for going over a data limit - Verizon's senior cell phone plan might have the most to offer. It also is one of the most expensive, at $70 a month after an additional $30 fee upfront.

For the truly cheapest plan, seniors looking for a deal should check out FreedomPop's Free Senior's Plan. After an initial $19.99 activation fee, there is no monthly charge, making it possibly the only truly free phone plan. This great offer does come with limits, FreedomPop only works with unlocked Sprint CDMA devices and their free senior cell plan is limited to 200 minutes, 500MB data, and 500 messages.

Although most of these cell phone plans only offer discounts to seniors, the GreatCall Jitterbug Smart Plan provides an extra level of service. Their Jitterbug smartphone is designed for seniors, from moving the microphone to make conversations easier to a simplified menu, and even voice typing. The Jitterbug phone also has a 5Star Urgent Response button, which connects the user to a 5Star Response agent, who can assist in situations like medical emergencies. Pressing the 5Star button can also send an alert to loved ones so they can be more reassured and connected with your life and health. Three different levels of health and safety packages give you customizable options that combine personal safety and a great phone plan.

From great plans to great deals, some of the top cell phone companies have special cell phone plans for folks over 55. But which of the options are the best cell phone plan for seniors?
