If you're planning a trip to Europe, there are plenty of things to do in Italy whether it's your first time in Italy or you're backpacking through. Italy is best known for flourishing during the 11th century Renaissance with scholars and artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Today tourists from all around the world flock to Italy to view Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper painting and Michelangelo's painting ceiling at the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.

Italy is also known as the capital of the Roman Empire, and today tourists still marvel at the remains of Roman architecture such as the Roman Colosseum where gladiators would battle wild beasts until their death. Though you won't have to battle any lions yourself, imagining yourself in Roman history can be quite a fun day. Other popular Italian attractions in Rome include the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Make sure you have some Euros to make a wish once you're standing next to the massive fountain that served Rome for more than 400 years.

Though cities like Rome, Milan and Florence have the most tourist attractions such as the high end Italian fashion houses among the biggest must-see museums and landmarks, the Italian countryside is also worth visiting for the calm air of the Mediterranean seas. The Italian Riviera is known for its mild climates and old charm of fishing ports and incredible landscapes.
