Who holds Larry Bird's mantle for the best white American player in the NBA today? No, Blake Griffin and Steph Curry don't count. Neither do European NBA All Stars Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis, or Domantas Sabonis. What makes a white American NBA player great? Is it passing ability, shooting acumen, or big man post skills? The best white NBA players in the NBA right now are typically great at the fundamentals or deceptively quick.

Yes, since Larry Bird retired there have been very few white American NBA stars. Kevin Love held the mantle for a while there during the LeBron Cavs years, even winning a title in 2016. With #2 overall 2022 NBA draft pick Chet Holmgren now in the mix, maybe there is a chance for the first white American MVP since Bird in '86.
