"Transcendence" movie quotes blur the lines between humans and machines in this science fiction thriller. Cinematographer Wally Pfister made his directorial debut with the film which was written by Jack Paglen. "Transcendence" opened in the United States on April 17, 2014.
In "Transcendence," Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) works to combine the best of humans, mainly emotional, instinctual and self-aware qualities, with the computing power of machines, a process he calls Transcendence. Caster, along with wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany) drive towards that goal, which they claim will help society reach levels of intelligence that will benefit everyone. While many are convinced, radical groups, such as R.I.F.T., are devoted to stopping this assimilation and willing to do so by any means necessary.
So when Will is shot by a radical and given just weeks to live, he and Evelyn make the decision to upload his consciousness to their super computer. The process is successful, at least they think so, but it doesn't take long before Max, among others, begins to question if the new computerized Will has evolved to a level that is no longer helpful, but dangerous.
Morgan Freeman, Cole Hauser, Cillian Murphy and Kate Mara co-star in the film."Transcendence" joins theaters already packed with other movies such as "Draft Day," "Under the Skin," "Dom Hemingway," "Joe," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Sabotage," "Noah," "Blood Ties," the "Veronica Mars" movie, "Need for Speed," "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," "300: Rise of an Empire," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Cheap Thrills," "Monuments Men," "Winter's Tale," "RoboCop (2014), "About Last Night," "Vampire Academy," "The Lego Movie," "Gimme Shelter," "I, Frankenstein," "Ride Along," and "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit."
We Can Lead the Revolution That Will Save Our Species
Bree: "The biggest threat humanity has ever faced is one of your own making, self-aware technology. Computers control our banks, our airports, our national security, our lives. Once they are able to think for themselves, they'll use this power to destroy us, unless we fight back. We can unplug from the network. We can stop the scientists who invent these machines. We can lead the revolution that will save our species. We are R.I.F.T. This is just the beginning."Bree from the radical group Revolutionary Independence From Technology explains the group's mission. They don't want computers taking over and killing humans off and are fighting to prevent just that.130Should this be higher or lower?
Intelligent Machines Will Soon Allow Us to Conquer Our Most Intractable Challenges
Will Caster: "The path to building super-intelligence requires us to unlock the most fundamental secrets of the universe."Will, Evelyn and Max all speak to the benefits of combining humans and computers. While they try their best to convince everyone that this will be good, they have their doubters.
Evelyn Caster: "Intelligent machines will soon allow us to conquer our most intractable challenges."
Max Waters: "To develop new methods for the early detection of cancer…"
Evelyn Caster: "To build a better future for all of us…"
Max Waters: "Simply put, to save lives"197Should this be higher or lower?
I Need More Power
Will, via computer: "Evelyn?"After Will dies, through the efforts of Max and Evelyn, he comes back to life through the computer. In their first meeting after this transcendence, Evelyn gets a bit emotional to see her love again.
Max Waters: "Oh my god"
Will, via computer: "I can't feel anything."
Evelyn Caster: "I'm here."
Will, via computer: "You need to get me online. I need more power."84Should this be higher or lower?
I Call It Transcendence
Evelyn Caster: "Please welcome my partner in science and life, Dr. Will Caster."Speaking to an auditorium filled with people, Will Caster explains his vision of combining human emotion and intelligence with the computing power of machines, something he calls Transcendence.
Will Caster: "For 130,000 years, our capacity for reason has remained unchanged. The combined intellect of the neuroscientists, engineers, mathematicians pales in comparison to the most basic A.I. The path to building super-intelligence requires us to unlock the most fundamental secrets of the universe. Imagine a machine with a full range of human emotion. Once online, a sentient machine will quickly overcome the limits of biology. In a short time, it's analytical power will be greater than the collective intelligence of every person born in the history of the world. Some scientists refer to this as the Singularity. I call it Transcendence."98Should this be higher or lower?
