Before he became the latest Marvel superhero to wow MCU fans on the big screen, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu modeled for some stock photo shoots — and the internet is going nuts over it.
Liu has been haunted by these photos ever since posing for them back in 2014. In one tweet, he wrote that for one shoot he was paid just $120 and "signed away all my rights to them because I was in credit card debt." Since then, they've appeared on textbooks, in advertisements, and on posters — but now, they're mostly used as fodder for memes from fans who are ecstatic to discover that their new favorite superhero used to be a stock photo model. Even Liu himself has used one of the images to poke fun at Shang-Chi haters.

Are These Photos Canon?
No the funny thing is these stock photos really do feel like Simu Liu is incognito and in hiding as a normal citizen— Arthur Chu (@arthur_affect) September 6, 2021
Especially the ones where he's the only person in the scene looking directly into the camera https://t.co/3ZZfrT5ArT pic.twitter.com/CG0d3QPrf5
