Deadpool 2 is winning over critics and audiences alike, but the Merc with a Mouth's follow-up film has its fair share of confusing timelines, retcons, and plot devices. Audiences anticipated Deadpool's insane life would get even crazier. They knew Wade Wilson's jokes and fourth wall breaks would be hilarious. What many fans were not ready for, however, were all of the unanswered questions from Deadpool 2.

The future of the franchise remains in flux – with the rumored purchase of Fox by Disney hanging over its head like the Sword of Damocles – but most fans are adamant that whatever happens, they want to see more of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, and they’ll take him any way they can get him.

Deadpool 2 introduces a number of important characters and concepts, including Cable, Domino, X-Force, and the Department of Mutant Control. Although not all of these ideas are explored fully throughout the course of the movie, the door is certainly wide open for future films to expand upon them – and the success of Deadpool 2 suggests it would be profitable to do so.

What Is The Future Of The Franchise?

The conclusion of Deadpool 2 feels like a natural transition to an X-Force film, but the future of the franchise remains rather murky after that. Ryan Reynolds has suggested a Deadpool 3 is unlikely to happen, but it’s hard to imagine Fox not wanting to complete the trilogy.

Of course, the rumored purchase of Fox by Disney further muddies the waters, as the entire X-continuity may end up being rebooted so it can fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As long as Reynolds continues to portray the Merc with a Mouth, chances are fans will be okay with whatever happens.

What Kind Of Future Did Cable Come From?

Audiences watching Deadpool 2 learn Cable comes from the future rather quickly, but very little detail is given about his exact time period of origin. Whatever year Cable hails from certainly has a post-apocalyptic feel to it – or should that be post-apocalypse? The how and why Cable becomes cybernetically affected, or how he comes into conflict with the adult Firefist, remains a complete mystery.

What Are The Butterfly Effects Of The Mid-Credits Scene?

The plot of Deadpool 2 relies heavily on time travel, but it isn’t a concept treated very responsibly by either the characters in the film or the screenwriters themselves. In the mid-credits scene, Deadpool steals Cable’s time travel device and goes back to save Vanessa’s life, rescue Peter, and murder the version of himself from Wolverine: Origins.

According to the rules of time travel presented in the film, all of these actions should demonstrably change the future, and thus rewrite the events of Deadpool 2 entirely. For example, if Vanessa doesn’t die, most of Wade Wilson’s motivation to protect Russell disappears.

    What Are Cable’s Powers?

In the comic books, Cable has an impressive array of superpowers, including particularly powerful brands of both telepathy and telekinesis. In Deadpool 2, the situation is a little more vague. Movie Cable appears to have the same techno-organic body parts as his comic counterpart, but they look like they could just be cybernetic enhancements. Cable also appears to use telekinesis in Deadpool 2, but he only ever uses it on his gun, so that could be a technology-based ability rather than a mutant power.

Is X-Force A Real Team Now?

The end of Deadpool 2 certainly suggests Wade Wilson and his new X-Force “family” are a genuine team, but there are still some lingering questions about the group. Will X-Force remain independent, or will they just be a branch of the X-Men? Are characters like Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Yukio really going to jump ship from the X-Men to X-Force? Are they actually going to give the rather unstable Firefist a place on the roster? Only the upcoming X-Force film will be able to reveal the answers.

    Who Is Yukio?

One of the breakout stars of Deadpool 2 is Yukio, Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s effervescent girlfriend. Many fans speculate that Yukio, who appears to have electricity-based mutant powers, is an adaptation of the young X-Men known as Surge.

According to the film’s writers, however, that is not the case. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick stated Yukio is meant to be an adaptation of the Japanese assassin from the comics of the same name, but that character already appears as an adult in The Wolverine. Given the wonky timeline of the X-franchise, the two characters could be one and the same, but it still feels rather unlikely.
