While there's lots to love about popular action anime like My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, and Naruto, there's also a whole world of lesser-known shows that are also worth your time. Whether you've already burned through every hit show out there and are looking for something new, or prefer your anime off-the-grid in the first place, one of these underrated action anime is sure to speak to you. 

Looking for something deeply bizarre? Try Ben-To, an anime about all-out battles for an unusual prize - discounted bento boxes from the convenience store. Enjoy space operas with tons of intergalactic battles and excellent character development? Try Terra e..., a series about a dystopian future where humans are controlled by computers and a powerful race called the Mu is subjected to discrimination.

  • After a gateway to another world opens up in New York City, both the humans of NYC and the otherworldly creatures who have made their way there become trapped together in an impenetrable bubble. New York City, which is now called Hellsalem's Lot, predictably slides into chaos. Libra is an organization full of oddballs that seeks to keep the peace as much as possible, as well as prevent the same thing from happening elsewhere. 

    When the protagonist, Leonardo Watch, accidentally develops an incredible power in exchange for his sister's eyesight, he ends up joining Libra in his pursuit of answers - and having a much stranger experience than he ever anticipated. 

  • If your favorite thing about action anime is the training montages, you need to watch Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciplean anime that is essentially one gigantic training montage. Kenichi Shirahama is a weak person who finally gets up the courage to join his school's karate club, only to be nearly bullied out of it.

    But just as he's about to give up, he meets a mysterious female classmate who he desperately wants to impress. He decides to take up training at this classmates' dojo and quickly gets involved not only with a gang named Ragnorok, but with trying to develop his own style of martial arts by mastering Karate, Muay Thai, Ju Jitsu, and Chinese Martial Arts and then combining them. 

  • All Rikuo Nura wants is to lead the normal life of an average school kid, but his youkai grandfather has other ideas. Rikuo is the heir to the Nura Clan, a powerful group of youkai who are frequently targeted by other youkai groups. Whether he likes it or not, Rikuo must learn how to use his youkai powers if he wants to keep the humans and the youkai that he loves safe from harm.

    Basilisk is basically Romeo & Juliet with ninjas. The Iga and Kouga ninja clans are fierce rivals who have been at war for years. During a brief interlude of peace, the two family heirs, Oboro Iga and Gennosuke Kouga, fall in love with one another. At first, they hope that their union will bring lasting peace to both clans, but this is not to be. Instead, they're dragged into another bloody war, and forced to choose between their love for each other and their duty to their respective clans.

    Mido Ban and Amano Ginji operate a two-man organization called the GetBackers. They specialize in retrieving lost or stolen items, which can involve anything from a bus pass to a magical relic. They don't get a lot of clients, so they're perpetually broke, but they're good at what they do. While the animation can occasionally be spotty, the unique premise and cool action sequences make up for it.

    If you're looking for an action anime with an utterly bizarre premise, you should try out Ben-To. It takes place in a world where discounted bento boxes are prized possessions that the members of the Half-Priced Food Lovers Club battle over. 

    You Satou is inadvertently drawn into this bizarre world when he tries to buy a bento of his own and is thrown immediately into a battle with a Wolf - those are the successful bento hunters. Sure, he could just avoid the store at night, but maybe he wants to be a Wolf too.
