History is (among other things) storytelling, and that means some people get cast as heroes or villains, whether they deserve it or not. Artists, too - ruthlessly pragmatic beings that they are - can take historical figures and shape them to their own fictional purposes. Shakespeare wanted to use Richard III as a villain, and he did it so well that his depiction of the monarch has dominated our memory for 400 years.
