Vatican police raided a gay sex party – complete with drugs – at a very surprising place: the apartment of an high-ranking Catholic Church aide. Holy cow!

According to reports from the Vatican, the gay sex romp was busted after police got a tip about excessive (and illegal) drug use, and strange activity in general. What they found was much, much more than that. While engaging in gay sexual activity itself is not a crime, the people involved are not known for being LGBTQ friendly. And some are reporting the Pope himself is pretty pissed.

The aide in question was up for a promotion, but after this recent development, it's safe to say he probably won't be receiving it anytime soon.

According to news reports, Vatican police got a tip about strange activity happening at an apartment owned by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This office is responsible for tackling the church's issues with clerical sexual abuse.

Ironically, that's exactly where a drug-fueled gay sex romp was happening. Neighbors were concerned with the excessive noise and said people were suspiciously entering and leaving the apartment at strange hours. Police raided the flat in June 2017. While reports don't say who was at the party, they do say the apartment was occupied by a top aide to Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio – a key aide to Pope Francis.

Coccopalmerio reportedly was trying to get his aide a promotion before the bust.

The apartment building is part of a group of apartments owned by the church, where Cardinals, aides, and other top employees live. These particular flats are rented to employees, and members of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith live there.

It's also the place Pope Benedict XVI lived when he was Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, about 25 years before he became Pope Francis's predecessor. According to the New York Post, one Italian paper said the apartments were "a perfect location to enjoy the extraterritorial rights [of the Vatican] without having to undergo neither the checks of the Italian Sate nor those of the Vatican City."

This Isn't The Only Scandal Happening Right Now For The Church

This isn't the only sex scandal to come out in recent months involving the church. In June 2017, Australia's senior Roman Catholic prelate Cardinal George Pell was charged with sexual assault. Rumors speculate that Pell's sexual assault allegations stem from inappropriate relationships with minors. Pell was one of Pope Francis's top advisers. He was also accused of mishandling misconduct cases against clergy members in the Archdiocese of Melbourne and Sydney.

This isn't the first time Pell has been involved in a sex scandal, though it is the first time he's been formally charged. In 1993, he supported a priest accused of sexually assaulting young boys. He stood in solidarity with the church, causing outrage from victim advocates in Australia.
