Although they were meant to be fun and enjoyable, retro video games that caused arguments definitely existed. Whether they were competitive games that let you do whatever you wanted or supposedly cooperative affairs where your pals abandoned you, plenty of games ruined friendships.
Before the advent of online gaming, the vast majority of multiplayer games were enjoyed by people in the same room, using the same television. This allowed opponents to see each other's moves and added a more combative atmosphere to proceedings. With your friends playing right next to you, it was far easier to become frustrated with them when they did horrible things or screwed you over.
However, some titles were far more likely to lead to fights than others. If you decide to play the classics again, maybe only play with your enemies.
