In August 2018 - in an unprecedented purge - Facebook, Google, Apple, YouTube, Stitcher, and Spotify banned radio host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his InfoWars brand from their platforms, citing multiple violations of hate speech guidelines. As YouTube stated, “...When users violate these policies repeatedly, like our policies against hate speech and harassment or our terms prohibiting circumvention of our enforcement measures, we terminate their accounts." One outlet called this domino effect "de-platforming." Of the giants, only Twitter refused to remove Jones.
While some in the anti-Jones camp lauded the tech companies' moves, others pointed out Jones is merely a blip, embodying only the surface of deep-rooted problems with cyber threats, misinformation, bigotry, and racism. Jones responded by insisting his First Amendment rights were being violated. He proclaimed, "We're all Alex Jones now," and continued using Twitter to rally supporters against what he considers war against the conservative right and free speech.
