Dogs have been humanity's furry friends for centuries, but they didn't always look the way they do today. Many well-known breeds have changed drastically in physical appearance throughout the last hundred years, and a lot of that has to do with their "best friends," as this video illustrates.
Through careful breeding and genetics, humans have created upwards of 167 different dog breeds, each with unique physical and mental characteristics. And though the names may be the same as their counterparts a century ago, their characteristics are not.
One of the most drastic changes has been in the English bulldog, which started out a much slighter, smaller dog than the hulking, squat, wrinkly critter we know and love today.
Sadly, though, the genetics that have been groomed for its particular aesthetic have also come with some health problems for the dogs. Watch this video to learn more about the evolution of dogs and the development of the English bulldog.
