Once upon a time, Kelis's milkshake brought all the boys to the yard. Upon arrival, those boys unanimously agreed that "it's better than yours". Damn right it was. But what happened to Kelis? What has she been up to since the boys left the yard? Where did Kelis go?
As it turns out, the woman behind one of the most iconic jams of the early-2000s has been busy. Not only has she taken her career in a more culinary direction by launching her own barbeque sauce and appearing on various cooking shows, she's had a high profile relationship with the rapper Nas, and she even revealed her much discussed milkshake recipe (but is it the BEST milkshake?) so that the rest of us can finally summon the boys to the yard. What a charitable queen!
Here are a few things you didn't know about Kelis, since she couldn't realistically work everything about herself into one three-minute song.
Charitable Queen Kelis gifted the world with her milkshake recipe, so that we lessers could bring all the boys to the yard. Kelis deemed us worthy to receive her milkshake on National Milkshake Day, sharing her recipe on the Irish liqueur Baileys's YouTube channel. Now, if you fancy bringing any boys to the yard, here's what you'll need:
3 oz. Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur
8 oz. ginger beer
4 scoops of chocolate ice cream
5 pieces of candied ginger
1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
1 cup of ice
honey, chili powder, cinnamon, and sugar for the rim
ginger-infused whipped cream to top
Make at your own peril; you might end up with too many boys in your yard if you're not careful.
In 2014, Kelis nabbed herself a Cooking Channel show called Saucy & Sweet, which blended the traditional formats of cooking and reality shows, allowing viewers to get a look at her life while dishing out delicious recipes.
In the first episode, she cooks a huge thank you meal for her marketing team. Not only are viewers treated to a glimpse of Kelis's day-to-day, they're also gifted with an amazing recipe for jerk ribs, just liker her song!
While the boys were undoubtedly waiting for Kelis to be featured on Illmatic 2, the odds of that happening are now sadly unlikely, as the two filed for divorce in 2009. At the time, Kellis was seven-months pregnant, and cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
Nas put their business out there in 2012, referencing their divorce in his album Life is Good, and even going so far as to put her wedding dress on the album's cover. Kelis was unfazed by this, and spoke to The Guardian about her post-divorce feelings:
"I've been divorced for almost five years; it's over, I'm over it. But what I would say is that last year I was made more aware of it because my ex-husband decided to talk about stuff that I hadn't shared with the world. He slipped my wedding dress on to his album cover [2012's Life Is Good], so now I have to talk about it! I had no idea it was happening, I was like, 'What the…?' But it didn't affect my life. I'm not living that life now. I'm super-content and at peace."
Can you say multi-talented? Not only has Kelis popped out some bangers in her time, she's also an incredibly skilled chef. Kelis enrolled in the renowned culinary institute Le Cordon Bleu in 2008 and has come out a highly esteemed chef. Seems like the boys will start frequenting her yard asking for steak, beef bourguignon, and pasta primavera. Boys for all the dishes!
