Nick Lachey first rose to prominence as the heartthrob of pop quartet 98 Degrees, crooning sappy tunes like "I Do (Cherish You)" and "Thank God I Found You." But what happened to Nick Lachey after his boy band years? He broke out on his own in 2003, starring in the MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica, featuring himself and his new bride, fellow pop sensation Jessica Simpson. The show didn't last, and neither did the couple.
So where is Nick Lachey now, you might ask? Is he still singing? The answer is yes - since his divorce from Simpson in the early 2000s, he released a successful solo album. Lachey seems to be keeping busy: he's acted on a bunch of TV shows; hosted, produced, and starred in more reality programs; and got married again and had a family. As these stories about Nick Lachey prove, this singer has been one busy man.
At the height of his Newlyweds fame in 2003, Lachey released his first solo album, SoulO. Critically panned, it was treacly sweet to go with his squeaky-clean image of married love. The bizarre video for the first single, "Shut Up," featured a then-unknown Dax Shepherd living in a trailer next to Lachey and Simpson's house.
After his break-up with ex-wife Jessica Simpson in 2005, Nick went on the rebound, dating a bunch of Hollywood starlets. Among that number was future reality star Kim Kardashian, then best-known as Paris Hilton's BFF. The pair went out on a few dates in 2006, but the paparazzi caught wind and started snapping photos of then-newbie Kardashian and already-famous Lachey out and about. Lachey later claimed Kardashian called the photogs on them and used him to get attention.
In addition to Kardashian, Lachey also dated another future reality star - Lizzie Rovsek of Real Housewives of Orange County. And then there's Laguna Beach's Kristin Cavallari, with whom he shared a brief flirtation before meeting his current wife, Vanessa Minnillo.
After Lachey and Simpson split, the tabloids went absolutely insane. Lachey fueled the rumor mill with his second album, What's Left of Me. The title track was all about how a past lover broke his heart, giving listeners an open look at the pain of divorce. His interviews were pretty blunt, too:
"I don’t know if there were other men. But if she did cheat, it was the result of something bigger, not the reason we didn’t work... Sometimes I think it would be easier if I had just walked in the house and found her in bed with a guy. That would be clear-cut. End of story. I wouldn’t have to deal with the uncertainty of adultery."
In 2006, "What's Left of Me" became his first big solo hit, breaking the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. And the music video proved to be pretty important, too. The woman cast as Lachey's love interest was Vanessa Minnillo, at the time best known as an MTV VJ. The two soon started dating, and later got married.
After meeting Vanessa Minnillo in 2006 on the set of a music video, Lachey started wining and dining the presenter-actress. They split briefly in 2009, then reunited a few months later. Lachey remained non-committal on their future at the time, saying, "We're trying to figure things out. I don't pretend to know what the future holds, but everything's good. Vanessa's a good girl, and I care about her a lot."
