In most movies, as if by fulfillment of an old adolescent wish, the whole world really does revolve around a single character. And yet some of the whiniest heroes in movie history refuse to be happy about it. Some are just perpetually scared to leave their comfort zone, others have issues they never seem to be able to work out, and others still just get their whine on for comedic effect. Here you'll find a few serious offenders, including everything from reluctant heroes to some of the most annoying movie protagonists ever.
Which characters deserve to whine and which ones take it way too far? You get to decide. Vote for the characters whose constant whining is a little too over the top, and whose attitude harms the movie as a result.
Whiniest Quote: "It was sort of the pattern to my life - I'd never been strong enough to deal with the things outside my control, to attack the enemies or outrun them. To avoid the pain. Always human and weak, the only thing I'd ever been able to do was keep going. Endure. Survive."
Dramatic much? While Twilight was everyone's guilty pleasure there for awhile, there were few fans who didn't find themselves wanting to grab Bella every now and then and say, "Honey, get it together." On one level, there's the whole "hot guy who offers you eternal beauty and love" thing. On the other, it's a tad dramatic to purposely harm yourself and treat everyone in your life like crap and then blame "love."
Whinest Quote: "I feel lost... Obi-Wan and the council don't trust me... Something's happening. I'm not the Jedi I should be."
By the time the Star Wars prequels came out, it had been 20 years since everyone got their first introduction to Darth Vader. By that point, fans everywhere had a solid image in their minds of Darth Vader as a dark, collected, and hauntingly powerful supervillain. So it came as a bit of a shock to see him as an angsty, arrogant, and awkward teenager. In the films, Anakin Skywalker complains about everything from Obi-wan's tutelage to the texture of sand.
Anakin grows even harder to like as the sequels wear on; he takes himself way too seriously and expects everyone to recognize what a gift to the galaxy he is. When the universe refuses to cooperate with his expectations, things begin to go downhill in a bad way.
Whiniest Quote: "Will you just stay out of my life? Stop telling me what to do!"
Hilary Swank is awesome in pretty much every way - which is why it's so hard to watch her character, Julie Pierce, in The Next Karate Kid. In case you missed this 1994 gem, it's about Mr. Miyagi attempting to help Julie, the wayward daughter of an old friend. While Julie was probably meant to come across as some lost, punk kid who is transformed through the power of martial arts, she just comes across as the world's biggest whine-o. It's all "leave me alone!" and "no one understands me!" Seriously, her whines hurt more than any of the karate moves ever possibly could.
Whiniest Quote: "Ever since you got engaged, everything's turned to sh*t!"
Okay, so admittedly, Bridesmaids is hilarious, but part of what makes it so ridiculous is how insanely whiny Kristen Wiig's character Annie is. She lets her jealousy of Helen get the better of her and ends up ruining pretty much every event leading up to the marriage of her best friend, Lillian. Even if all we ever saw was the scene where she goes insane and ruins Lillian's bridal shower desserts, it'd be enough to put her among the ranks of the whiniest movie characters of all time.
Whiniest Quote: "Well I hope you feel bad, you should feel bad... I feel bad every single day."
Early on in the Transformers series, Sam's anxiety and stress levels are somewhat understandable, despite the fact that he has a gorgeous girlfriend and a car that regularly saves his life. After all, who wouldn't feel a bit shaky when coming to terms with vicious aliens and all? But in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the series' third entry, he takes it to the next level and comes across as angry, screamy, and whiny - especially in the scene where he goes crazy, almost gets arrested, and gets all snappy with his Bumblebee, even after his trusty automotive sidekick shows up to save him.
Whiniest Quotes: "You realize we're all going to go to college as virgins. They probably have special dorms for people like us."
While his American Pie antics may be hilarious, Jim spends the vast majority of the movie bemoaning his own inability to get laid. Finding the right girl or entering into a meaningful relationship never even seem to cross his mind. His only mission seems to be to lose his v-card before college by any means necessary. While he's out violating his mom's pie, it never even occurs to him that maybe he and his poor attitude are the problems rather than bad luck.
