15 Times Sports And Animals Collided

List Rules
Vote up the craziest animal incidents in sports history.

Sports and wild animals just don't mix, but that doesn't mean the two worlds haven't collided throughout history. With many popular sports being played outside in open fields, perhaps it was inevitable wild animals (or a domesticated house cat or two) would find their way onto the playing field.

Whether it's a giant weasel on the soccer pitch, a squirrel on the tennis court, or a cat strutting his stuff on Monday Night football, sometimes an animal on the field can rally the fans and inject some excitement into a game. Just watch the standing ovation Manu Ginobli gets when he swats a bat at a basketball game.

Not all of these encounters end well, particularly for the kangaroos that keeping jumping out onto an Australian race track. Nor for the unfortunate dove that flew between pitcher Randy Johnson's fastball and the catcher's mitt. Just watch the feathers fly when the ball hits the bird. Sometimes, the birds hit back though, as with the flock of seagulls that knocked a number of riders off their mounts at a horse race.

So check out this list of the wildest collisions between sports and animals. Vote up the crazy moments you can't believe happened and the funniest moments you want to watch again and again.

One of the most famous collisions of the sports world and the animal kingdom in history, Randy Johnson once threw a pitch so hard he exploded a bird. Johnson, one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the history of the game, delivered the spring training pitch at the exact moment a dove flew in its path. The dove went up in a flurry of feathers, and a legend was born.

The last thing a race car driver, traveling in excess of 150 mph, wants to see is an animal running out on the track in front of him. One imagines that dread is multiplied 10-fold when there is a chance a wild kangaroo will hop out in front of your car. At Mount Panorama race track in Bathurst, Australia, this is a recurring nightmare - for the drivers and the adorable marsupials, who do not always make it off the track unscathed.

If you're unsure what a pine marten is, think a big, angry weasel. One Swiss soccer player found this out the hard way during a 2013 soccer match when a pine marten ran on the field and disrupted play. The player jumped out and snared the pine marten with his bare hands and received a bite on his finger for the trouble. He did get the animal off the pitch, though.

    Seahawk Flies The Coop

A "seahawk" is not a real animal, so the Seattle football franchise uses Taima the augur hawk as its live mascot. The animal is trained to perform little tricks to entertain the crowd, but it is still a wild animal, as one fan found out when Taima went rogue, flying into the stands and landing on his head. The two appeared to make peace, though, and the man even pet the bird's feathers, which is not generally advisable.
