  • Wolfenstein: The New Order
    Photo: Bethesda

Wolfenstein: The New Order is the seventh main title in the Wolfenstein franchise, which takes place in the 1960s. The setting places William "B.J." Blazkowicz in Nazi-occupied Europe, where he takes the fight to them using just about anything and everything he can get his hands on.

The game's storyline depends on the morality choice made by the player during the prologue. As a result, the two timelines deviate into different story paths. Like its predecessor, it's possible to wield two weapons at once, and a cover system is also added into gameplay.

The game was widely praised for the combat mechanics, as well as the narrative storyline options available to the player. It received numerous awards, including Best Shooter award from more than a few publications.

  • Return To Castle Wolfenstein was released in 2001 and was designed as a reboot of the Wolfenstein series. Development was overseen by id Software, and it was positively received by players and critics alike.

Because it was made as a reboot, it effectively relaunched the franchise with entirely new mechanics, taking advantage of modern graphics and sound capabilities available at the time. Most of the games that followed were structured as sequels or one-off titles related to Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

The game received impressively high marks from Metacritic, IGN, GameSpot, and other video game review sites. While it was released and reviewed on the PC, XBOX, and PS2, the PC version consistently received higher grades than the other ports.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is the eighth title in the main Wolfenstein franchise, which serves as a direct sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Order. The setting falls within the year 1961, immediately following the events of its predecessor.

The player takes control of William "B.J." Blazkowicz to fight against the Nazi regime in the United States. Like the other games in the franchise, it's a first-person shooter, and gameplay follows a chapter system that offers choices for the player, which will change the storyline based on the decisions made in the prologue.

Like its predecessor, it was widely popular and received numerous accolades from a number of publications. It received several nominations at the 35th Annual Golden Joystick Awards as well as some at The Game Awards 2017, where it received "Best Action Game."

  • For many gamers in the early 1990s, Wolfenstein 3D was the first Wolfenstein game they ever played, and it was also the first first-person shooter they ever played. The game was groundbreaking, and it was insanely popular among the PC gaming community.

The game follows the adventure of William "B.J." Blazkowicz during World War II. He fights against the Nazis using a variety of weapons. The final confrontation is against a mecha-Adolf Hitler.

Wolfenstein 3D established many of the norms found in FPS titles being published today, and it was influential in the development of all the games that followed. It has been called the "grandfather of 3D shooters" and stands as the title that launched the Wolfenstein franchise — though it wasn't the first.
