The cleanest countries in the world also rank, not surprisingly, among the most beautiful countries in the world. Keeping any country with major cities clean is no small task, but the world's cleanest countries have figured out a balance between population and sanitation and work tirelessly to be the cleanest and most efficient countries. Others have a national culture that tends towards tidiness and find that cleanliness is enforced through societal pressure and expectations.

Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life.
