“Trump of the East,” “Duterte Harry,” and “The Punisher” are a just few of the nicknames for the monstrosity that is the President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte. The man is an admitted murderer, a vocal misogynist and homophobe, and all-around, Grade-A, genuine piece of sh*t. He makes Donald Trump look like a saint.
Duterte was born into politics, with his father being a regional governor. In the late '80s, Duterte became mayor of his home city of Davao, and he was reelected six times. In 2015, he ran for presidential office. Duterte’s strong stance against drugs and drug trafficking was popular among Filipinos and lead to his presidential victory in May 2016.
Despite his popularity among his devout supporters, Duterte’s antics have spurred serious concern around the world. His war on drugs has caused the UN to accuse him of human right’s violations. Even politicians within his own government have called for his impeachment.
Here are some of the worst things Rodrigo Duterte has done. Take a look at the list below, and try to not let the anger boil out of you.
He's Literally Admitted To Killing People Before
Donald Trump may be a lot of things, but he isn’t an admitted murderer. Trump may have murdered the hopes and dreams of many people for a bright future, but Rodrigo Duterte actually KILLED PEOPLE. In a televised interview, Duterte admitted that he literally murdered three people three months before the interview.
“Yes, of course. I must admit I have killed,” he said. “Three months early on I killed about... three people.”
In another public statement, during a press conference in Manila, he boasted about killing again.
“I killed about three of them because there were three of them,” he said. “I don’t really know how many bullets from my gun went inside their bodies... And I’d go around in Davao with a motorcycle, with a big bike around, and I would just patrol the streets, looking for trouble, also,” he continued. “I was really looking for a confrontation, so I could kill.”
Wow. Just Wow.
John Oliver probably had the best reaction to this news during an episode of Last Week Tonight.
“I’m sorry... about three people? That’s not good!” shouted Oliver. “Not knowing how many people you’ve killed is like not knowing how many Vicodin you took: If you don’t know the exact number, the answer is way too f*cking many.”
He Spoke Positively About Hitler And Compared Himself To Him
As a world leader, you probably don’t want to take your cues from the worst guy in human history, Adolf Hitler. But, Duterte admires him and actively tries to emulate him.
During a press conference, Duterte compared his war on drugs to the Holocaust.
“[Critics] portrayed [me] to be some cousin of Hitler,” he said. “Hitler massacred three million Jews, now there is three million drug addicts. I’d be happy to slaughter them. If Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have...” he said while pointing to himself.
Now, not only did he get the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust wrong (it was 6 million), he actually said that he wanted to start a holocaust in his own country.
Seriously, how did this guy rise to power?
He Laments Not Being Involved In A Gang Rape
This is the most grotesque thing he’s ever said about women, and honestly it’s hard to read without clenching your fists and gagging in your mouth. Duterte made a truly horrendous statement about Jacqueline Hamill, an Australian missionary who was gang raped and murdered during the 1989 Davao hostage crisis. Basically, rather than condemning the incident, he lamented the fact that he didn't get to rape her first because he was Mayor of Davao at the time.
“I looked at her face - son of a b*tch - what a waste,” he said. “What came to mind was, they raped her, they lined up. I was angry because she was raped, that’s one thing... but she was so beautiful, the mayor should have been first. What a waste.”
He Called The Pope A "Son Of A Wh*re"
Duterte just loves throwing around “son of a whore.” It's a moniker that he even slung at Pope Francis. Given that the Philippines is an overwhelmingly Roman Catholic nation (86% of Filipinos are Catholic), Duterte decided to back track and issue an apology to the Pope. Well, he said he wanted to issue an apology. But then he changed his mind and said he refused to do so. He then changed his mind again, and wrote him a letter apologizing for his choice of words, instead. Honestly, the fact that he has ever uttered I'm sorry is totally shocking.
