When Jean was first introduced in X-Men #1, she was simply telekinetic, but over the years she was revealed to have telepathy. In 2001, an issue of New X-Men revealed that she could absorb massive amounts of psionic energy from others and combine her telepathy and telekinesis. Most recently, she swapped powers with Psylocke and developed the ability to call upon "Phoenix Raptors," which are exactly what they sound like.

Following the Dark Phoenix saga, which ended with Jean committing suicide on the moon, Marvel decided to do something interesting with the popular character. They left her for dead. Rather than bring her back a few issues later, Jean stayed dead until 1986, when her body was discovered at the bottom of Jamaica Bay in Fantastic Four #286.
